Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Road Bike.

Hi All,

I'm new to bikeforums and am seeking some advice. I intend to buy a road bike within the next couple weeks. I will buy something used for about $500. I have a close friend at my disposal who is very knowledgeable and will make sure I find a good bike, but I am seeking more opinions. Over time I intend to replace parts on the bike as I learn more. So with that in mind, could anyone offer any general advice on what to look out for? I will stick with the frame that I purchase, so that is probably most important. So I would like to have a frame that is both lightweight and convenient/versatile when swapping parts.

Thanks a lot

Spend more and get a bike where you don't have to change/replace/upgrade every single part on the bike, including the frame.

Also make sure the bike fits you.

Depending on the size of frame you need, there are some pretty good deals on craigslist, you just have to stay on it while looking. Bikes on CL are a lot like new cars, generally they seem to run about 1/2 of retail for a 2-4 year old bike. If you bide your time you could end up with a bike with 105+ level components for the price of the Moto posted above.
