Actually.....
I had one hell of a ride last week. It was like the perfect storm. I got 2 flats, a bunch of my spokes popped out, my chain broke, my rims both exploded, my seatpost cracked in half, and my handlebars somehow just came off. The best part was that I didn't even crash! But I did have to walk the bike home after that. The whole time I was walking, I was thinking that I really should have brought some extra shoes or flip flops or something with me.

I never ride a mile away form home. I just go around the block.
If walking was an issue I'd put my cleat covers on and start hiking in my sidis.

About 7 miles from the finish of the Amgen Break Away ride I blew a hole in my rear tire, did the $1 boot thing which lasted maybe a mile, started walking with shoes/cleats on. Probably 4 miles into my walk a nice couple from the area who were also cyclists stopped and offered me a ride.

Yep, rear tire blowout...shredded the sidewall...6 miles from the beginning of the bike path where my truck was. Many, many kind people offered tubes, I just pointed to the sidewall and smiled. They said "ooohhhh." I got a different than expected workout that day. Wasn't using clipless at the time so walking wasn't a real problem. Hadn't really planned on walking 6 miles though.....

Since I converted to non-pneumatic tires and stripped the gears and brakes from my bike, I've not had a single roadside breakdown. I duct taped a chain tool and quick link to my seatpost, and don't worry about anything else.

The first time I ever went to the mountains I got dropped HARD on Hogpen and walk about 1/2 a mile. Then I was finally able to through my leg over the bike and give it another shot.

Well, I'm a clydesdale and at that point was probably at my max weight ever (less now) and the tires were (now that I've thought about it) too old. I'm riding Conti Ultra Gatorskins now and no problems. No, I'd say it's not common. Scared the hell out of me when it blew, thoght I was being shot at. It was a rear, I managed to retain control and bring the bike to a nice stop.

I was out with the girlfriend on a MUP a couple weekends ago in 100+ degree weather. After about 10 miles, we stopped at the water station because she said she wasn't feeling good and then she fainted. We ended up walking back 2 miles to the parking lot. I took my shoes off to walk but ended up burning my heels a little on the hot asphalt pavement...

Mountain biking. I was doing a 12 mile loop that had no exit points. It went around the lake. I broke a chain at mile 6. Dead middle. Had to walk out.
I now carry a chain tool.

I walked my road bike a few miles to the light rail. The bead on my tire failed and no matter what I tried it would not stay put at 10psi or more.
It was the middle of the summer so I walked barefoot and rode the train to REI and replaced the tire. One long expensive commute.

Just once... Probably about 2 miles to a bus stop.. Traffic was heavy.. I failed to see a field of glass in time and traffic forced me into that pile of debris.. My tires were a mess . So, I walked to the nearest bus stop in order to get home.

Well, I used to do just that, but now half of my teeth are removable. Hated to do it, but had to go the chain tool route. When my saddle finally gave out, I sawed off a hunk of 2x4 and bolted it to my seatpost. So far, so good.

my left crank somehow worked itself loose and fell off on my way to work yesterday. I walked it about a mile to the nearest subway station, all sorts of peds shooting me strange looks as I clicked and clacked.
luckily the subway attendant let me on the train even though it was rush hour. got to work at 8:30 and was prepared to wait for the LBSes to open, but I ran into a buddy who happened to have a full suite of tools in his office. 20m later I was back on two wheels and no longer cursing CL (I bought used)
