Replacing chainrings

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Replacing chainrings

Ok so I've worn out my 2007 Rival's 53T chainring and I'm trying to decide what to do next. The little ring seems to be fine but the big one makes a ton of noise now. I'm thinking of the following:

1) Replace big ring with Stronglight CT2
2) Get a new Rival OCT crank
3) Get a new Force crank
4) Get a set of Rotor Q-Rings

discuss

I have a question. How many chains have you worn out? Chains and cassettes wear out many times faster than chainrings. If your chain is worn and stretched, it would be normal for the chainring to make noise. It would also be normal for the small ring to make less noise, due to the shorter distance along which the chain makes contact with the ring.

Not sure where to start. But something ain't right, and whatever it is, options 1-4 are not the solutions.

Most likely you have a drivetrain issue that you are mistakenly blaming on the chainring.... something's loose or out of adjustment.

how many miles on the rings?

i agree with the rest, its probably not a wear issue, i'd start with a new chain, possibly cassette, then up to another chainring, in that order.

In the old days, chainring teeth were all cut the same way and looked identical. Now, they are cut differently depending on their position on the crank in an effort to improve shifting.

Um, maybe it's just me, but why not replace it with a Rival 53T chainring?

I'm sure there are many things that any one particular store doesn't carry.

The main chainring teeth that you have to be concerned with are those right near the crank arm and 180 degrees from it. That's where most of your pedaling force is being directed. Those chainring teeth you took pictures of do not look worn out but that doesn't mean that the other teeth aren't. But, I also would agree with the others that your problem is likely not the chainring but something else that's out of adjustment (front derailler probably).

The 07, 08 SRAM chainrings were not stiff. I suspect they were not heat treated correctly. You are going to spend $50 for a new one. Universal Cycles has a good selection of SRAM. You might consider a 2009 SRAM Force Carbon. They are selling for $200 online. The SRAM Red outer chainrings are a huge improvement over other SRAM chainrings.
