How many people ride with stacked headsets?
Noticed a lot of bikes with spacers lately, now that I know what to look for coming from a MTB world. So just how many people run with spacers and why? Strictly for comfort? Something else? Just curious.

Back issues have me on a 210mm head tube with almost a full stack of spacers. Would love to get lower, but I also want to continue to ride

I would guess that the vast majority or road bikes have several spacers and/or a stem with rise.

i was told that for carbon steerers you shouldnt have more than an inch and a half from top tube to stem.

I don't remember exactly the measurement, but the manual included with my Easton EC 90 stem specified a maximum stack height.

I do it for comfort and because I hate to cut a fork! I even sometimes stack a threaded fork if there is only an inch or so that needs trimmed.

Although Alpha Q used to make a fork with a CF steerer that was specifically designed to handle more.

Tech bulletin for my Madone says I should have at least 1 spacer on top and bottom.

That looks substantially less than 3" of spacers. Typical spacer is 10mm. 3" would be 8 10mm spacers, plus a 5mm spacer.

sometimes people dont count the top cap of the headset but on my richey integrated headset, the top cap is a big tall cone. So thats 15 cm before any spacers

You are correct, it is less than 3". Sorry for the confusion. I'll post up exact later, probably between 2-2.5" - perhaps 60mm (2.4")

Not sure if you were serious, but the maximum stack height on that fork is 40mm, you're more than twice the rcommended height.
