Ebay prices??

Did anyone else notice Ebay prices seem to have gone up??

Between the Paypal (Ebay) fees and increased Ebay fees I am bumming out.

What's with the foreign names? Seems like I keep selling to foreign individuals even if address is in US.

I would say screw Ebay but what else is there with this much exposure?

Any of you feel the same lately?

I never use ebay anymore. For some reason unknown to me, people think they should be able to sell their used crap for $5 less than what it cost new in the store.

mx_599 06-16-10 08:14 PM

the final value fee is now 9%. I think it was just 7% a couple months ago. all fees considered is probably totaling around 15% now. I am unsure if this seems fair...

I sold a few things and was taken back by the total amount that I owed Ebay. this did not include the automatic deductions of PayPal as the items were paid for.

I try to sell stuff on Craigslist or forums before I go to eBay. That way I don't have to deal will listing it and all the fees along with shipping.

AEO 06-16-10 08:39 PM

ebay has gone down the drain ever since new management took over... like 2 years ago.

I still use paypal and purchase off of ebay, but I won't sell stuff.

Other hobbies have their own auction sites. Mabye we need a bikebay.

+2, I sell vintage bikes and old MTBs on CL. No fees, no shipping, low hassle. Just have to deal with a few CL idiots, but most folks are really good to deal with.

mrnotwo 06-16-10 09:45 PM

shipping, ebay and paypal fees end up costing around 20% of the auction sale and craiglist is full of time wasting tire kickers. I am giving up selling used stuff online and either keep it or sell/give it to friends.

I have had crap only with selling stuff on CL. People seem to think that reasonably prices stuff should be given away. 2 examples. Made a deal to sell a single wheel for $15. Guy shows up and says he will give me $5. Threw him out of my office. Also had a free bike listed. Older steel good for a fixie or beater. After about a dozen people that promised they wanted it never showed up a guy says he will take it if I deliver it to him. WTF. Threw it in the dumpster.

From a buyers point of view on scambay, UPS and FedEx have spent the great depression raising rates. At least 30% more to ship a bike vs 8 months ago. So higher fees all around make ebay less attractive.

Craigslist sucks. Just tire kickers and low ballers.

ptle 06-16-10 10:57 PM

With Craigslist, you just got to be patient. After a while you can tell which ones are idiots and which ones are actually interested in what you're selling.

Motobetird 06-17-10 12:00 AM

Ebay charges 12%. Paypal charges 4.5% off the top including shipping paid. Ebay doesn't charge 12% of shipping charges. Jack of the shipping charges by 2 or 3 times, which keeps the bids lower, but in the end you earn more money.

fogrider 06-17-10 12:07 AM

I end up with a bunch of stuff from projects and I like to sell on craigslist. you get all kinds, low ******, tire kickers and just guys trying to build a project. my rules, don't reply to low ballers...I rather not sell it than sell to low ballers...I price things low to begin with! and yes, be patient...but if I'm going to get interest it happens within a day of posting.

Why the hell do you care what someone's name is?

David Duke is line one, waiting to speak to you

I just bought a brand spanking new in-the-box Ultegra SL brake calipers for $50 on craigslist. Being patient on craigslist is key. I might buy stuff on flea bay, but I ain't selling there no more. The fees between them and PayPal, which they own, has become a joke.

wow, that was unnecessary.

sorry, some of the names seem fake. I have been jerked around before. I say US only with a set shipping price and then someone wins in another country.

calm down.

Yes, Ebay fees are a deal breaker. I have a few things left to sell, then I'll be a buyer only.

CL might work if you live in a population center, but for people in smaller towns, there aren't many options.

yeah, this is the problem I would have. CL would not be an option here.

Maybe I could have family in another area sell for me??

You guys don't let people come to your house for things do you??

do you like meet them in a parking lot to sell a derailleur or something?

If by foreign, you mean non-anglicized, there are a TON of 1st or even 2nd generation Americans from immigrant parents who will name their children according to what's 'popular' from where they originate.

I should know, I'm one of them. I'm no Tom, Bill or Bob, but every bit as "American" as any other American.

Get used to it.

This is a good case for "it's at the curb at such-and-such address, come get it" type ads with no contact information. Watch it disappear! Might not be the best idea to post your address if you live in a secluded house, but in an apartment complex or something, it'd be just fine. Or you could always use your neighbor's address. :)
