new to gears

i started riding about 2 years ago with a track bike, and now i'm looking into getting a multi-geared bike. nothing too expensive. is something that is like 1x9 or 7 good or should i look into something with more gears? just recommend me a quality low cost starter bike please

Depends what kind of riding you're going to do and how much $$ you have. Go to a bike shop, look around, and test ride.

You need at least 2x10 or you won't be able to compete in the Tour De La French.

Most road bikes are going to be (2, 3) x (9 ,10) depending on the level of bike and options.

I assume you're thinking drop bar road bike?

New, from a shop, a decent one with sora/tiagra(I much prefer minimum tiagra shifters for ergo) components starts around $7-800. I'd highly recommend getting one with a carbon front fork.

Trek 1.2
Fuji Roubaix
Specialized Allez

Many, many others, all depends on what your LBS deals in.

How much are you willing to spend? If only a couple hundred, the only type of road bike you'll be able to buy is a used one.
