Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

recovery drink after every ride?

Just curious what everybody elses habits are regarding a protein recovery drink after rides.

My usual route takes me over about 50 miles and I usually finish off with 3 or so hill repeats up the local wall. For as long as I can remember I've had muscle milk mixed with chocolate milk and cut with a little water as a recovery drink after any ride that I feel I've put in enough effort to deserve one.

If nothing else at least it motivates me during my ride cause it is goooooooooddd.

If I do a hard ride, I'll try and get a protein shake in me asap. If I'm driving out to meet people for a ride, I'll bring a cooler with some water and protein so I can drink it literally 30 seconds after the ride is finished. From there I'll try and eat a meal within an hour.

I've heard 15 minutes after you stop working out is the best time for your muscles to absorb protein.

If I feel I have had a good workout I go for the Hammer Revoverite ASAP, and usually throw in a banana too.

I have a whey protein shake with a spoon full of greek no fat plain yogurt and some fresh or frozen fruit. A protein smoothie if you will. Good protein and some natural sugar carbs to help me recover. Tastes delicious and real good fer ya!

I but super advanced whey protein from walmart which is a good brand at a great price.

not necessary, unless you've worked particularly long and hard.

I use GNC Pro Performance AMP protein: https://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp...046468.4174422

It has about 60g of protein per serving, and a bunch of other stuff to maximize your workout. I started taking this when I was lifting a lot, but I'm considering moving to something a little less intense now.

To those who use Recoverite, how is it? Does it taste good?

Protein drinks are market hype. Eat some tuna fish or sardines if you want protein. I like grapes, tomato juice and a baked potato after a century.

When I have done a real hard or long ride, or maybe ridden in some tougher weather, whether hot or cold, I drink some type of recovery specific drink afterward. Otherwise, I just try to eat relatively soon after I ride (within an hour or two).

Monday, Wednesday and Friday I pedal for an hour before work. I could be wrong, but I just don't feel like need a recovery drink. Normally, I just drink a cup of coffee.

If you're not gaining weight from the recovery drinks, I don't really see a problem with them, but honestly you probably don't "need" them.

ya there are definitely rides when I don't feel I need one. After a ride if I can't make it up the stairs cause my legs feel like jello, I usually feel like my efforts deserve one.

A half litre of choc milk and a spoonful of protein powder makes a great appetite suppressant.

Exactly!

Myself I mix up some Anabolic Window (protein), Endurox R4 and a bit of chocolate milk powder (for flavour) after every ride...

I find that by the time I'm home, from a ride, that the hunger pangs set in pretty quick. Before I would be rummaging through the cupboards looking for anything and would usually settle on CRAP!

The mixture is quick and easy and curbs the hunger so I can get changed, stretch and then make some real food...

BTW I do the same as the poster above and bring the mixture with me in a cooler if I have to drive to a ride/race...

What works for me, may not work for others or vice versa...

And then it depends on what's coming up the following day. Stage race with a 6 hour Road race, and another coming up the next day I'll use some sort of recovery drink to make sure I'm taking advantage of the glycogen storing window and be ready for the next day.

But a hard 6 hour effort on Sunday, with a day off Monday, I'm not going to use a recovery drink, given that it won't affect my 90 minute ride on Tuesday, and I can avoid the calories, and I'll just eat something when I feel like it.

If I do a hard ride I mainly focus on replenishing glycogen since there's a limited time to do that. You want the 4:1 ratio of carbs to protein, right? Seems like some of you are stressing protein a little too much.

Later on when I'm eating dinner that's when I'll think about eating a little more protein than normal. I'll just up my meat or beans intake. Never been a fan of protein drinks.

It usually comes in a dark brown bottle and even occasionally in a green bottle.-------------------you guessed it. The after ride drink of champions.

+1. Bodybuilders need lots of protein. I haven't seen any evidence for cyclists needing excess protein.
