Speedplay shoe adapters

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speedplay shoe adapters

A couple of questions for you Speedplay X or Zero owners:

Does the 3 bolt adapter add any height to your pedals?

How much height is gained (if any) versus, for example, a LOOK pedal?

This depends on your shoes but with Sidis, they add almost no extra height because the Speedplay cleats themselves are pretty slim and have a low stack-height when compared to Look cleats. Also, the adapters fit into the special recesses in the Sidi soles. The end result is actually still a lower overall stack height with Speedplay cleats than with Look cleats. This may not be true for all shoes though.

They're older Diadoras. Not sure of the model. My buddy just got some Speedplay X/3s but he was concerned about the stack height after he put the adapter plate on the shoe. there aren't that many shoes out there that have the 4-bolt pattern, so I was just curious.

Stack height with 4 hole mounting: 8.5mm
Stack height with 3 hole mounting kit: 11.5mm

So, a 3mm difference. Not too much

And there you have it. Just for the sake of comparison, Look's stack height is somewhere around 20mm although I understand that the new Look Keo cleats are slimmer and has a stack height of somewhere around 15mm.

I also wonder if they got rid of that awful squeak. That alone is enough to drive you insane.
