Good routes starting off Stevens Creek road in Cupertino?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good routes starting off Stevens Creek road in Cupertino?

I know this may be a glaringly obvious question to the regulars here, but for someone new to the area (myself) who lives by Stevens Creek Road near Montebello road, anybody know any good (and safe) loops or popular recommended routes that are used by cyclists up to Skyline and beyond?

I'm looking for a variety of distances to pick from, and if there are any comments on best times to NOT ride these roads due to car traffic, would also be appreciated.

Climbing is good!
