Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fixed. Damn, I can't stand that guy. At least McCarver can be comedic after a few drinks.

The thing I like about Sherwin and Liggett is their true love for the sport. Sure, they are old school, but I'll take a commentator with a deep respect and love for the sport anytime over a well spoken knowledgeable guy like Joe Buck.

And NO cycling commentator can raise goose bumps calling the last kilometer like Phil. That guy could make the last mile of my commute TV worthy.

The two Brits (maybe Aussies?) that announce World Superbike races are pretty entertaining, can't remember their names, though.

If I hear this one more time I might take a golf club to the TV.

Schlanger - `Well Gogo if the finish line were another 15 meters up the road rider X would have won'
Gogulski - `Well Steve the finish line is where it is'.

Let's face it. It ain't a bike race until Phil shows up.

Anyone who's ever been subject to Eurosport's mind-numbing monotone (AKA Sean Kelly) will go running back to Phil & Paul in a heartbeat. Contador might be burying Lance on the Tourmalet, but that won't stop Kelly's blocked nose from droning on with ancient anecdotes about the "class-i-ment" or "the situaaaaaaation". Kelly can make watching apples turn brown much more appealing than watching a race he's doing commentary on. Phil might be on the Lance PR-machine payroll, but I'll gladly take even Roll and Trautwig (fired?) over Kelly and anyone else they pair him up with. Okay, maybe not Frankie Andreu...

Why does Magnus Backstedt (great job at the Dauphiné) sound Australian?

Oooohh no! They got nothing on those losers doing Monday Night Football the last couple years: Tirico, Theismann & Kornheiser.

When you look up "awful" in the dictionary it should have a picture of them.

Anyway, Skip Bayless is *right there* with Kornheiser, and just as attractive on TV as well. They must have to mount spit guards on the cameras when either of those two giants of broadcasting are in the studio.

You know, I find Sherwin & Ligget soothing, like putting my son to bed in the cradle with the baby music on.

I don't really listen to them anyway... they're just comforting with nothing important to say.

The cliches are a bit much at times and Phil is making more mistakes now than ever. I have no complaints about Paul.

I'd like to see Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May commentate.

That fact that Clarkson hates cycling would make it that much more entertaining.

That's what I'm talking about - unbridled passion for the sport! It's so cool to hear Phil's call of the last K!

BTW - anyone tally this thread yet?

My faves are the EuroSport team of Dave Harmon and Sean Kelly. Their commentary is well-informed, Sean knows a ton (and if you're not challenged by accents, he's whip-smart and well-spoken), and they know the field far better than Liggett and Sherwin.

As was mentioned before, Liggett's prime days were during the heyday of Hinault, LeMond, Fignon and Indurain. Since then, he's lost some focus, likely due to his wearing too many hats during these races. I often get the feeling that Liggett is "phoning in" his commentary, using the same tired clichés that, while he coined the phrases for most, are simply worn out.

And I think that Schlanger and Gogulski are coming along just fine. These days, in fact, I prefer them to Liggett and Sherwin. And I love hearing Magnus Backstedt on Cycling.tv, as his perspective is current.

If either one of them had any freaking clue that there are riders in the race OTHER than one certain Texan, they would be bearable.

Since I don't watch the race solely to be updated on everything Lance - they should go jump off a cliff.

No doubt Phil screws up and misses a few things - probably while he's multi-tasking. Yet, I think he's remarkably perceptive & has thrown out some unforgettable lines like when Lance looked back at Jan on a climb and Phil interpreted this as "Are you coming or not...? And the answer is NOT...." If I had seen "The look" w/o Phil commenting - and had an hour to ponder it - I doubt I'd be able to manufacture anything remotely as entertaining as what Phil was able to do in the moment. In fact, I doubt I would see "The look" as important. Lance has also downplayed the significance of "The look". There's certainly some constructivism involved here. Regardless of Phil's accuracy in his interpretation of the existential phenomenology going on with Lance, from my point of view, he created one of the coolest moment's in cycling that I've seen in the eleven years that I've been watching it.
