Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Orange County, CA. I love it here. I live in Irvine and it is close to the beach or the canyon. Perfect.

Like others have said So Cal is the best. Can ride pretty much everyday out of the year. Gets cold occasionally on some winter days but nothing that you can't brush off and ride anyway as it's not freezing temps, just cold to us Californians. Not to mention being able to ride in different settings is awesome, can go beach riding or up in the mountains etc, only thing that sucks out here are the crappy drivers that fill our roads.

When you say Hawaii is a nightmare you must be talking about the big island because you certainly cannot lump the entire state of Hawaii into your riding experience on a single island. I have lived on Oahu for almost 3 years now and 99% of the time the riding weather is awesome. I live on the leeward side so we get very little rain so you can ride just about every day of the year. I am typically up and riding by 7:30 AM and ride for a couple of hours on the weekends and have never (or extremely rarely) ever had an issue with the humidity.

I would definitely say the answer has to be Hawaii, but that it probably depends which island you ride on and where you ride. We definitely would have to have some of the most scenic rides though.

Northern CA suburbs are better for MTB.

Southern CA suburbs better for road.

Definitely.. San Diego being the best choice among California cities. I like the never too hot aspect of San Diego.

Where is the best city/state for year round cycling?

Victoria isn't bad. It gets a bit damp and chilly here in the winter but the roads are still rideable. It gets a bit hot here in summer, but this past summer we only had a handful of days over 40C.

how about Chapel Hill NC? a friend of mine says it never gets much below freezing or much over 80. I don't know whether that's true, but if so sounds promising.

You actually used rain gear? I never even bothered with it.

I'm just going to be a home state homer, but Tennessee is very good if you're interested in some good terrain. East Tennessee has the Great Smoky Mountains, which are some good fun for mountain biking or if you're aiming for the polka dot jersey. Middle Tennessee is nothing but rolling hills with a few daunting climbs and very sharp downhills. West Tennessee has slightly less rolling hills. And the rural areas in Tennessee make for fantastic riding. I rode for a good 40 miles yesterday and on the backroads I got passed by a car like 4 times. And the downhills in Middle Tennessee rival some rollercoasters once you get up to 40 mph or so and the road starts corkscrewing. Weather isn't too bad. Right now it's lower 90s with little humidity but it was worse earlier. Tennessee weather is beyond unpredictable. I wore shorts to Thanksgiving last year. The next month we had the most snow I've ever seen in my life (granted, 6 or 7 inches...). This May we had a 1 in a millennium flood where Nashville was submerged. Normally we're pretty warm up until October. In October, it gets to the mid 30s. In November, it warms back up. In December, we start to cool down again and January-February are the coldest. Then it warms back up in March and things are all Jim Dandy again.

All around, Tennessee is pretty sweet.

You're talking about a couple of rainy days per week for 3 months out of the year, right?

San Diego is a wonderful place to live for cyclists, but I'll take my hometowL.A), the greater variation in terrain makes up the difference for me.

I enjoy pedaling down to the ocean from my mid-town home; I enjoy being able to climb thousands of feet on hundreds of streets - most of them traffic-free - in the Santa Monica Mountains directly north of my house; ride a bit farther north and I'm in the Verdugo Mountains on the far side of the San Fernando Valley, or I'm on the Palos Verdes Peninsula to the south, above San Pedro Harbor. I can ride alone or with any of the many groups that meet somewhere everyday of the week.

And 60-90 minutes beyond L.A., we have deserts, we have 10,000+ ft. peaks, we have Highway 1 running up the coast.

Another vote for SoCal; the only knock on it is the traffic is horrid and I'm not talking about the freeways either. You'll go to a remote road to do some climbs and there can be herds of cars going up it to get away from all the other people.

Not this year. My entire family is from Central California and they were buried with rain this year. Many of the crops were ruined with cold weather and rain all the way into early June.

This was a one-off kind of year though. I used to bike a lot back in college up there and other than that nightmare El Nino year I pretty much could go when I wanted.

Your friend is smoking crack. I lived in Greensboro (right next to chapel hill) for a few years. Got over 100 for quite a few weeks each year and routinely got in the single digits in the Winter. Still, not a bad place to ride if you head over to the West side of the state.
