Alternatives to Versus for watching TdF in US
This is related to to the Sherwin & Liggett thread: what are the alternatives to Versus for watching the Tour de France in the US? For each option, this information would be helpful:
- connection information, such as web address - what is the quality of the video? Is it subject to pauses due to high traffic load (for a web site)? Is it low resolution, or small picture? - what is the cost, if any? - does it show each stage live - does it allow you to watch the stage later (like when I get home from work)? - does it have live commentary, and is it informative? In 2009, I watched the Giro on Universal Sports through their web site, and it was pretty good coverage. It was free then, but in 2010 they charged for it. I am looking for something similar for the TdF; then maybe we can get rid of cable in our house. |
I bet atdhe.net will stream it. I've watched some world cup games and wimbledon through their streams in the last few weeks. Also watched hockey playoffs there as well. I really wish I had Versus as part of my cable package, but RCN hates me.
I've also watched some other races through steephill.tv, so I'd look there too. |

If you don't have cable, and that's why you want an alternative, Versus is selling internet streaming for $29.95.
If you want alternative and excellent audio commentary, cycling.tv will have it live and archived. I plan to watch the Versus feed and listen to the cycling.tv commentary. |
what channel is versus on on direct tv?

Does anyone have a channel NAME? I'm planning on bunkering at the parents' house for this event but they have Charter and not DirecTV.

Anyone have an answer to this question yet?
"- does it allow you to watch the stage later (like when I get home from work)?" I probably won't be around to watch most of the stages live, I'm wondering if I can get more than just highlights. |
If you have digital cable and a decent TV, see if you can just get the sports package that Versus is a part of. Here in RI with Cox cable it's only like 6 bucks a month...I believe you can drop it later with no penalty.
Compared to a stream off the Internet...a nice HD picture is a no brainer. |
universal sports will cover a truncated version of each race. |
