Speedplay Zero - Easy/Cheap Way to Grease Them

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speedplay Zero - Easy/Cheap Way to Grease Them

I recently got Speedplay Zero's for my new bike and had read that one didn't necessarily need to use the official Speedplay grease gun - that a grease injector with a fine tip might work.

I tried this $6.00 Oregon chainsaw bar sprocket-tip greaser from Lowe's (the big home center chain) and it worked great. The tiny, pointed metal tip fits perfectly in the grease port on the side of the pedal (after removing the small #1 Phillips screw). A few pushes on the spring-loaded grease gun and the old grease was spooging out the back of the pedal around the spindle in no time. It did seem to help to rotate the pedal while pushing the grease in, like the Speedplay greasing instructions indicate.

Looks like there's enough grease in the gun to last for many greasings....probably dozens. It's a very viscous, blue grease - looks like the waterproof kind. If it's good enough to work on a chainsaw bar sprocket I imagine it's fine for pedals.

Just wanted to pass the tip along in case anyone with Zero's hadn't found an appropriate grease injector yet.

You can also get a needle point tip for a normal grease gun for just a few dollars

Thanks, Festero!

What is that thing on the left that looks like a probe of some sort? Does it fit on the tip of the grease gun?

You can also get the little oral medication dosing syringes from a pharmacy - usually for free - the ones they use for infant and toddler medications and used those. I did for years.

I use a 3cc syringe I took from work. Removed the needle, and presto...instant mini grease gun. Works like a charm, total cost zero dollars and zero cents.

Yes -- this works great. I used this method to grease my speedplays last week. Can't beat a free syringe and a $5 container of marine bearing grease from the hardware store for price.

I use this finish line grease gun.
makes grease application much easier and cleaner than other options.

This looks better to me than the Speedplay grease gun. The Speedplay grease gun is messy to use and messy to change the grease cartridge in. This look much cleaner and probably cheaper too.

I use the same one. Works great for the pedals, and for most other things too.

I might have to buy one and Ebay my Speedplay grease gun along with the grease cartridge I just bought. I get tired of putting the Speedplay grease gun in a plastic bag because it get grease all over everything.

Do this thing stay fairly clean?

tip is easy to clean off and it won't ooze out grease unless you push the injector pump.

I just leave it sitting in the top shelf of my tool chest and clean the tip after I use it. Never had it leak or squeeze out grease when I didn't want it to.
