Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cannondale CAAD9 Tire Clearance

Hi,

Does anyone know from experience, not from Cannondale's literature, what the max tire size you can use both front and rear is (and which brand worked)? I've had no problem with Michelin Pro Race 25mm's in the rear and it looks like I might be able to go bigger. Don't want to waste money trying a 27mm if it won't fit.

My goal is to run Vittoria Pave 27mm tubulars. If you've had 27mm's work that would be awesome.

Thanks

35 randos won't fit mine, but 25 vittorias will. Never tried 27's, but the 35's were actually pretty close and those are some chunky ass tires, so I think you'd be ok.

Best thing to do is just ask the shop if they have a built up rear with a 27 that you can try- even if the cassette won't fit your chain, you can still plug the wheel in the dropouts and try to spin it.

I have a system six, which I believe is similar in the back. I've used Michelin Krylion 25 in the back with just enough clearance; I could not imagine anything larger fitting. As an aside, I now use a 23 as sometimes a pebble or something else would get stuck in the small gap every now and then.
