The 1.1 will be fine for a beginner.

If you can look at the 1.2 as well. It will come with a carbon fork to make your ride more comfortable.

Also, have a look at the: http://www.feltbicycles.com/USA/2010...eries/F95.aspx

It's a GREAT bike for what you pay. You can definitely bargain it down to $700.

Most bikes in that price range are going to be very similar. The Trek 1.1 is good for a beginner, but I recommend the 1.2 as it has a carbon fork and better components.

I can second the 1.2 recommendation. I picked one up this spring (first road bike in about 20 years) and I'm having a blast with it.

Get the 1.2.

There are lots of bikes in that price range,my feeling is to go with at least 105 components in whatever you get. I think Treks are a little overpriced compared with the competition. Good luck and happy ridding.

I just got a felt entry level road bike and i love it. A bit over your price point but you wont be disappointed.

I seriously doubt you're going to find 105 components for under $700 unless you get lucky on craigslist, or you're willing to buy a bike on the internet without riding it first (not me).

the 1.2 is a substantial upgrade from the 1.1, but it is going to be trick to get it under $700 (where I live, it retails for $800). if you can squeeze out the extra $100, I would, but if $700 is your limit I would get the 1.1 and enjoy it...you might need $100 for accessories anyway

The Windsor Fens at BD for $699 no tax, shipped. There, I said it. Since this is your first road bike though, I'd go local as you will have the support and advice of your LBS. If there's a Performance Bike in your area, I'd look there, too.

I owned a Trek 1.1. I have ridden 200 miles in two weeks and it performs well. Now I purchased the 1.1 because it was in my budget. The 1.2 is a fine bike and I believe they go on sale next week. My co-worker rides a Felt F95 and it's a sweet bike. He had to change the seat.
