Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lance, luck & nine lives

With Lance's run of bad luck during this year's tour, perhaps it is due to the fact that he has prveviously used all nine of his lives (i.e. luck).

Life 1 - beats cancer (don't mean to trivialize this in the least!)
Lives 2-8 - wins 7 tours in a row with near 100% good fortune
Life 9 - either a) avoids the doping problems in the sport by staying clean and not encountering an unfortunate false positive that would have been devastating or b) evades the doping problems in the sport by somehow besting the system. You can decide a or b depending on your point of view.

So, entering this year's tour, he's just plain out of luck and 9 lives.

Or maybe he is simply not as nimble and agile as he once was.

He's old. He's senile. He probably doesn't even know where or who he is right now.

BTW, who the hell is he? Why is he defecating on my lawn?

The first sign of Alzheimer's Disease is thinking that you can still climb with the young kids like Contador and Schleck. No falls would have just delayed the inevitable in this tour.

He's previously on record expressing fear about riding in the peloton after his return.

He can no longer manage his fear.

I must not fear.

As many times as some of those pros went down, I don't doubt it. Hell, a few of them fell down on straight roads in light traffic. After the accident in the feed zone, I agree with Jens Voight "those guys from Euskatel-Euskadi can't seem to stay on top of thier machines."

i second this. Lance wasn't the only guy falling.

Just wish someone would stick a rod in Contador's spokes........

None of these responses make sense. the guys placed 4th in the prologue...quite ahead of alberto. He was in excellent condition for the tour this year...better than last year, not the best in his life but he was capable of being competitive this year. He just had a few to many crashes this year...none that seemed to be by his fault, especially when the idiot was passing a feeding bag out of the feeding zone.

The guy is a legend...he probably doesn't know what to do with himself unless he's got his heart rate @ 80% 6 hrs a day. Show some respect...fan or no fan...I'm happy that I was able to watch this guy make history in my lifetime.

He can still ride all of our asses in the ground 2 times over, he has earned respect and legendary status. You don't have to like him but results are results.

I have a lot of respect for Lance. Hes a pretty big doosher though. I'd really like to have seen him win this years TdF. Seems like he was in good enough form to at least have a shot.

If it wasn't for his stroke of bad luck, he would have placed in the top 10 maybe even the top 5. Maybe he won't retire now because he doesn't want to end his career on a bad note. He is capable of coming next year and making into the top 10.
