Spinergy stealth pbo clincher
 

Does anybody have these wheel and what are your thoughts?
I would like a carbon clincher set, but would also like an aluminum brake surface.
Are there others I should take a look at for a reasonable price...I can get these for $700

don't get these. the spokes are not aero & will cost you a few pretty watts, which makes it not that much better than a normal 30mm clincher.

look at some of the european sites (xxcyles, jedisports, or some other german sites), and you can probably find cosmic carbones for about 900. personally, if i were on a budget, i'd get the shimano 7850 C50, which can be had for $1200. not cheap, bbut definitely more aero.

if cost is of no concern, save another $700 & get some HED wheels. they are more aero than zipps & probably more durable, too

fwiw, the spokes are actually quite reliable (giggle all you want about fiberglass spokes, but i don't think i've come across reading about them breaking when i was researching these).

as far as aero is concerned, there make quite a difference

-height of rim
-shape of rim (say the torroid zipp vs a deep V shaped)
-width of rim (if the rim width matches that of the tire, less drag)
-number of spokes, fewer the better
-shape of spoke (which really shouldn't be an issue as most are butted spokes (aka aero) when you go upmarket). well, all except spinergy

here's an old ass post where they conducted windtunnel testing. too bad a lot of wheels aren't tested. one thing that will stand out is that certain low profile clinchers are actually quite aero. HED did their own testing & determined their deep dish to be more aero than that of the competition. take that with however large grain of salt you'd like

almost forgot, one place you may want to look is the slowtwitch classified section. there are quite a bit of good deals out there if you are patient

I can't figure why the Spinergy PBO's are so slow to be known about and catch on. The spokes are half the weight of steel and 3 times the strength, so a 16 spoke radial front is extremeley aero, especially when combined with the 43mm deep carbon fibre wheel. I'm no racer, but I am a very fast club rider and members of my club seem to not know about my wheels (Spinergy Stealth PBO) and are also astounded that they can't hold my wheel descending. I guess if you're a flatlander and want to be able to spin up a sprint breakaway on queue, you could make a case against the 1695g weight of the wheelset. IMO, they are a great, reliable, durable, all around wheelset. As far as I know, nobody who has actually ridden them thinks ill of the Spinergys with their PBO spokes. I was surprised to find out recently that PBO has been used for the rigging on top level racing yachts for most of the last decade. Google "PBO rigging" if you'd like to read up on same.

I have these wheels (actually 2 pair; pair A) w/ Continental Gatorskin sliks & pair B) Continental Vapor knobbies for same bike). The wheels are, IMHO, bombproof (NO truing after thousands of miles), comfortable, and cool. Both pair were true out of the box & have stayed that way. They give a VERY comfortable ride, not like the Kyseriums, which are good but so stiff they rattled my bones (and you can probably imagine which bones I am referring to). Paid $800/pr BicycleBuys. If I didn't like them, I would not have picked up 2 pair. I did contact Spinergy customer service in California because I wanted to know about possible service issues in temperature Hot & cold extremes (none reported) and the people were pleasant and knowedgeable.





I never saw a bike I didn't like.
