Lots of good bikes to choose from. Do you have any local shops to check out? FWIW, I recently tried a 2009 Scott Speedster S20 that I really liked. With discount it was $1350.00 Just a hair out of your range, but a lot of bike for the $$. Others will tell you to look used to get more for your money. Just make sure you get the proper size bike is the main thing. Read a lot, and ride a lot before you buy. You are starting to get into the price range where you can get a lot of bike. But do realize you will need additional funds for accesories.

It depends on what kind of bike you what. You could get a racier bike that has a more aggressive geometry or you could get a bike with a more relaxed geometry. Having a relaxed geometry bike doesn't mean you're going to be slow though.

I would check out some local bike shops and ask to do some test rides. Also when doing the test ride, ride for more than a few laps around the parking lot.

You may also want to save money for other gear such as shoes, pedals, helmet, water bottles/cages, and clothing (bibs/jersey).

How was the geometry of the Scott set up? I have heard they are a little more relaxed than the CAAD9.
