Aero Profile low priced clinchers?
I was thinking of trying a set of Aero wheels, however, other than the Soul 4.0s, it seems that high profile aluminum clinchers aren't that popular?
I know American Classic has the 420s, but is there anything else out there?
I looked at the Mavic Cosmic Elites, but at 30mm, they're no taller than lots of other wheels out there (and heavier too).

What's wrong with the soul 4.0?
If you really want aero, consider carbon.

If you want Aero, as in aerodynamically designed; Felt's TTR2 wheels were designed in the wind tunnel. They feature a 21mm widex42mm deep rim. The msrp is $600 but you could probably get them for less from someone who buys a Felt Tri bike and wants to unload them. They are heavier than the Soul 4.0s but probably more aero.
There is also Sram S30, Zipp 101 and Hed's wide clinchers which are all more aero than most training clinchers.

I looked at the S30, i've already got a set of Kinlin XR-300 based wheels, so the S30/101 seems like a sideways move (maybe some benefit from the torroidal rim). I'll check out the Felts

those SOUL wheels are really pretty sweet. i took them out for a fast 40 miles last nite, and they're really a great riding wheel.
they are the least expensive deep section clinchers on the market. period.

You already have a 30mm clincher, is it really going to be worth it to get 10mm more? When building my last set of wheels, I finally came to the conclusion that if I wasn't going to get deep carbon, I might as well not care about aero at all. So, I got some extremely light and shallow clinchers and will worry about aero when I can afford a more expensive set of wheels.

Neuvation. Amazingly cheap and surprisingly durable (I weigh 185 + a 20 lb bike and I am known to be rough on equipment).

However, you might check out the 40mm Vuelta Corsa wheelsets. I have the all carbon version of these wheels and am real pleased - good build quality, stiff, etc.
The aluminum/carbon set weighs in at 2016g and costs 500.00.

if you want aero without the super-high price, you might check out SRAM's S30/S60/S80 wheels. They're also known as Flashpoint FP30/60/80s, if you don't want the SRAM branding. they're not full carbon (alloy braking surface/rim), but i like em. cheap on ebay for deeeeeep section rims.
for alloy rims, i'm currently trying out Ritchey Pro DS (Ritchey Pro Deep Section).

Man, at 205 lbs. wet, only the Soul 8.5s wouldn't push the weight limits for me...
25 lbs. down, another 15 lbs. to go and then I should be good to go on a set of 4.0s or 5.0s.

Rolf has two sets that are both reasonably light, and reasonably aero.
A buddy has the um Vigor? And they definitely descend faster than my Elans... but my Elans are 1350g for the set making them REALLY light, and yes, decently aero.

Agreed. Anything below 50mm is pretty much insignificant- might as well take care never to unzip your jersey or ride with your mouth open. I now use 404 tubs when I want aero in a race, but just as often race on traditional alloy tubs. The alloy tubs are much nicer wheels all round. "Aero" aluminium is just overpriced anchorweights as far as I can see- if you have alloy, get lightweight alloy (which means box section tubulars), if you want aero, you'll have to accept that it's going to be carbon and probably quite pricey. And that truly aero clinchers are very heavy, so you probably want to go tubular there too.

Thanks, I suppose 10mm isnt' that much. Maybe light-weight clinchers do make sense, or deep aero. The problem is that deep aero costs more than i'm willing to spend (or more than I can justify).

I'd tend to disagree. I'd also say you can't judge the aerodynamics of a wheel based solely on depth. A poorly designed 50mm wheel could be less aero than a well designed 25mm one. Aerodynamics is the result of smart design not increased rim depth.

Well yes, depth isn't the only determining factor. Our point is just that compromises are questionable in this area. There will always be a middle ground, but I personally decided that if I couldn't go all out, I'd rather not bother.
