the real question is, do you want to listen to music while riding OR ride while you listen to music?
How serious is your riding? Not really serious if you want to distract.

I have the older version of this (the green ones). They work well for riding, but they still fall out on occasion when I run. For running, I use the same "sports" line with the behind the head wrap around thing. Those are perfect for running, but I haven't tried them on with my helmet. Not sure if the neck band is compatible with my helmet.

Advantage to ear buds is that with a lower volume you are actually limiting your long term hearing loss from wind noise. Plus you can still hear a car coming.
I'd like to personally strangle whomever at Apple thinks their earphones are usable. I can't get them to actually stay in my ear. The weight of the cord pulls them out easily.

Etymotic Research ER6i are my favorite, but I have gone through 2 pairs since October '08.
The problem I've run into has been the cord is very thin and does not have a much insulation. My last pair died at the 3.5mm jack and probably would have lived longer if I would have been more careful removing them from my music player.

The cord is thin, and too long. Always tangling. I really want to get a set of the one sided ear buds. hmmmm, more to buy!

An alternative to ear buds
How's this for an odd first post:
I plug an x-mini into my IPod and strap it to my bars next to my computer. I can hear the tunes and the traffic. The unexpected benefit is that when riding on a MUP, the slow riders and peds hear me coming and get out of the way without me saying a word. Pick especially menacing music for these stretches.
