Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was heading home around midnight after work and stopped at a red light... I gunned it off the line and the first car passed me, then a truck was passing but then slowed down. After a few seconds the passenger leans out the window and says, "26 miles per hour!" I gave them a thumbs up and they proceeded up the road... I guess when I'm wearing a backpack in the middle of the night, people aren't as likely to taunt me?

When I get my bike, I think I might duct tape a Louisville Slugger to the top bar...

Wonder if it will fit. Might add some weight though, considering its solid wood.

So if I get taunted or approached Ill do my best Dustin Pedroia impression haha

Do you guys say stuff to other cyclists you see, while you're driving?
Words of encouragement?
If someone yelled "Go Spartacus!" at me I'd feel badass

Go ahead and add the bat...call it training weight. Ha

As for other cyclist, I'm normally too out of breath to yell but I give them the thumbs up or rock fingers. I get the occasional "Way to go, pick em up and put em down!" while I'm out.

I was just starting out from a light and a car full of young girls were yelling and waving, one whistled real loud a wolf whistle. It was great fun for both of us, but I couldn't help but wonder how they would feel if they knew I had grandchildren older than them.

I hope this one doesn't count, but:

I was stuck in traffic once in the car, and saw a bike coming by. I gave him a thumbs up. He looked, then did an angry double-take, glaring at me, so I gave him another thumbs up, and he calmed down, gave me some rock-on fingers, and continued on his way. He must have thought I was flipping him off...

every time someone pulls the lance one or something like it trying to be funny, I ask him where he gets his material from and tell him he should go pro because he's so original and refreshing.

seems to shut them up.

I drove past a cyclist going up a really steep hill that I have done so I know how hard it is. I gave him the thumbs up and just as I did it he gave up and stopped by the side of the road in agony. That's the golden touch I have.

Yesterday i was cheered on. I was climbing a hill and a car pulled up next to me slowing down and slowing down traffic. He then yelled "yeah, let's go Geargrinder!"(name of the team i'm on). It turns out he drove the team car in a race or two. It made me laugh and get on with my suffering.

Actually he went into the left lane but parallel, so i say he pulled up next to me.

I once got cut off by a woman so I caught her in her car and screamed at her. She went on a long tirade about how I should be on the sidewalk since I am on a bike then drove off.

Another time this other guy and I were cut off by a tow truck downtown. He just whipped in to our lane to park and presumably tow some car without a blinker and the rear blade-like section of his truck came DANG close to the head of the guy in front of me. So, we both stop and the guy in front of me screams some not-so-nice things at the tow truck driver. He responded with "YOU were behind ME, man!!!!!!!" and it was so confusing / stupid / bewildering the guy and I exchanged "WTF?" looks and had nothing to say (that guy was probably just messing with us).

And finally: my wife rides and people yell "NICE A**!" at her from time to time (she got 2 groups of guys yelling that in a single day once). Makes me feel rather annoyed that the more highly-evolved cyclists tend to have to endure ridicule from a seemingly simian group of drivers, but what can you do?

Well don't get annoyed by that...
If she does have a nice bottom just pat yourself on the back...

"Yeah, I'm the man" must be your thought.

I had some 20 year old kiddie winkle chuck a pop bottle at me from the passenger side while I was going up a hill that curved sharply to the right. Honestly scared the crap out of me as he threw it from behind me and I jerked left and almost ended up getting hit by the car behind him. He then proceeded to give me the bird. I did not respond.

My last taunt was inaudible, but I think I understood the message.
I was coming back home from a short ride and some fools in a car started yelling something and then sprayed me with a water gun. I immediately stopped to try and comprehend what exactly just happened, and then began sprinting to try and get their liscense plate number. I didnt though, probably could have but there were no lights wherei was.It wasn't all bad though, and i secretly liked getting watered down.
