Pre ride/race fuel

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pre ride/race fuel

So I'm wanting to get a little extra jolt into my ride. I'm wondering what you guys recommend for pre-ride nutrition. I currently use Hammer Gel (type with caffeine) but am wondering if there's a better option. I also, don't normally use the Hammer Gel before a ride unless it's going to be a 1/1.5 hour or more ride. So tell me...which brand of jet fuel do you juice up with?

I always ate an egg sandwich an hour or so before the race than had a pre-race drink about 1/2 hour before the race and consumed a gel while I was on the starting line.

Just remember, no matter what you do don't try it for the first time on race day. Try it on a few training rides that start at the same time as your races so you can figure out how it works for you. Getting stomach cramps or diarrhea 1/2 an hour into a race sucks!

Type or brand of drink and gel? I'm still learning about nutrition and don't know the big players in the cycle fuel game yet.

For early morning rides, I like to eat a half a bowl of cereal and milk an hour prior. For MUP races, I need more fuel for more power.

Haha I can't do the milk unless I want to lose it on the ride. My daily commute to work doesn't have any other racers to challenge and it's only a 1K ride so there's not much point in fueling up for that.

I used Cytomax pre-formance drinks and whatever gel I happened to find. I can't have any caffeine so I have no experience with the caffeinated gels.

Swig of homemade gel + water 15 minutes before the ride. A small meal about 90 minutes before the ride.

before road races or a fast ride like the Spectrum Ride in Palo Alto, CA (70 miles including to and from my apt) I've settled on a bottle of gatorade and a peanut butter, nutella, banana and honey sandwhich on Orowheat wheat bread.....its a habit now. for shorter rides <2hrs....usually nothing.

I don't race at all but before my rides i usually have a banana, either a bowl of cheerios or oatmeal, and down a big cup of water. Sometimes i'll make some scrambled eggs to change it up a bit. In general i just don't have anything heavy.
