$100 shorts ruined by a $5 saddle bag
Inner thigh of the shorts are found punctured through. Turns out the Performance Cat 1 brand saddle bag I used is too wide and it wears out my shorts during paddling.
So, don't make the same mistake I made. Other than choosing the right bag size to meet your storage needs, also look at the bag design itself. A good bag should be tapered down at the seatpost side to clear away from the legs.

OP You are correct. Bags are a wonderful way to "not forget" stuff but care must be taken. Sorry to hear about the shorts.

So it was the velcro that got you, right? Gotta keep that velcro covered. I just got a new bag and had to use tape to cover the velcro or I would have done the same.

I still don't like the basic essentials in my jersey pocket. What's a good small saddle bag that doesn't use velcro at the seatpost?

I have something like that, although not so fancy. The key is to pack it so your sparetube sits flat on your back, rather than a tire iron or multitool. Also, when I don't feel like carrying it and I only need one bottle of water, I can stuff it in an old water bottle with the top cut off.

Wow, thanks so much for posting this! I'll have to have someone watch my ass as I'm pedaling, but the other day I noticed fraying on the right side of my $120 bibs. I thought it might be the saddle, and I guess it still might be, but now I have another thing to check.

I'm under the view point that if it doesn't fit in your jersey pocket you don't need it, thus eliminating the need for the bag.

Remember that the velcro can also do a job on your CF as well.

I ruined a pair of shorts this way too. It wasn't the velcro though, my leg was hitting the bag itself. At first I thought the shorts were defective so I took them back to the shop and they replaced them. It wasn't until afterwards that I hopped on the trainer to watch my pedaling motion. I was just barely hitting the bag but after a few hundred miles it adds up. Ever since then, I keep everything in the jersey pocket. At first I was looking for a smaller bag, but now I think I'll just stick with the jersey method.

If the male side of the velcro, the plastic side, is exposed on the seat tube, your leg can tap it on the down stroke. At least that is how I have abraded 3x pairs of my shorts but they still work just fine.

Fortunately I caught the same problem before it ruined my new bibs. Black duct tape over the bag's seatpost strap solved the problem.
