Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My personal triumph...July mileage...

I hadn't ridden a 300 mile month since 2006...August to be precise, when I trained for and rode the Hotter 'n Hell. The last few years haven't been kind to accumulating mileage due to severe family health issues but this year has been relatively calm.

I've been tracking my mileage using RideWithGPS the last few months:
May 2010----------150.1 mi --------+7,733 ft climbing
June 2010---------127.9 mi---------+7,221 ft climbing

Yesterday I looked at my monthly total and saw I was at 254 miles! I thought "holy crap! I only need 46 miles today to hit 300!".

Unfortunately, I was signed up for a group ride with a newly formed cycling club at my church and the scheduled ride was 34 miles. The meeting place was a drive away, without an opportunity for me to ride to the start point. Also, I was leading the "long ride", so felt obligated to stay with the group.

I figured I'd add on once the ride finished, which was made more difficult when the group decided to turn back after 13 miles...so the total group ride ended up 26 miles. But once we all got back to the start, I said "I need 20 more miles to meet a mileage goal...see ya later!"

Off I went, watching the odomoter, re-tracing some of the ride I'd just finished. After 10 miles, I turned around and headed back. As I pulled up to the car, I looked at my computer, and it read 44.2. Crap! How did I screw that up? So back I went down the road for a mile, turned around and came back. The whole time I was thinking "I could just map a route a little longer than I actually rode" but the the cycling fairy kept showing up on my shoulder saying "no...that would be cheating!".

So...July totals...300.3 miles, 17,418 feet of climbing.

Yay me!

Nice! Wish I could do that much climbing in a month, maybe I'll try for September when I start training for Mount Mitchell.

Any time you can ride more than you did the month / year before is a good thing.

Wrapped up July with a little more than 1000 km which included a number of metrics, a century, a little bit of mountain biking, and did not let a day pass without riding at least 20km... and it has been a long time since I have done that or been able to do that.

Took it easy today and only rode 20km but will be starting August by riding a century tomorrow.

The ride is actually a metric (105km) but since I will be riding to and from the start point I will add 45 km to my ride and it won't be hard to ride another 13km.

I'm a self-confessed elite Fred. And you know me so you know that it is oh so painfully true!

And talking about miles is very "Fred". There is no denying that.

And it is cool that the OP is excited about his progress. Awesome!

You have just restored my faith in the world. Thank you. I grow so weary of seeing "cycling" events where the cars outnumber the bikes. Now I'm going to go have a beer to celebrate your good deed.

It has never made sense to me when folks drive their bikes to a ride / event unless it is an ungodly distance and it's only 23 km to the start point... figure I'll be nicely warmed up by the time I get there and since it's a more of a brisk social ride that will include pie the pace will be moderate.

To make things even more interesting... have decided to take my folder so it can earn it's big "C" for the year.... have already knocked down some small c's with it.

When I was attending bike events in Portland I was really pleased to see that bike parking was at a premium... seems like very few people will drive to any bike related event there.

My car free life really contributes to how many km I ride in a month... taking my daughters to and from school is good for 600km of riding a month but we had no school in July so I had to make up for that.

Congrats to the OP on meeting a goal. Tracking miles may be fredly to some but trying to increase my mileage as much as possible kept me riding and gave me more time on the bike. It's one way to challenge yourself if you mainly ride for fitness and not racing.

3 more weeks and I can get back on a bike...5 more to be really safe according to the Dr.....Haven't turned a pedal since May 29th. 30 miles/mth will feel great to me.

Wow 300 miles in a month? Light travels that distance in less than 2 thousands of a second.

Yeah...light is A LOT faster than me!

To further increase my fred-liness, I'm going to start tracking my average speed also.

you know what this means? it means you will have to keep increasing your mileage every month. that is a hell of a burden.

and i bet you will enjoy doing it as much as you enjoyed this month. thumbs up.

Thanks. August SHOULD be a good month...continued 40 - 50 mile rides on the weekends, 20 miles on Thursday nights, then vacation at Lake Tahoe at the end of the month and the potential to ride daily along with a planned circumnavigation of the lake (74 miles).

I'm shooting for an average speed of 17 mph!
