Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Recomendations for cycling related purchace from France!

Hello,
My wife, her brother and her sister are taking a trip to France at the end of September for 10 days. I was wondering what I should have her get for me that would be unique or less expensive in France.

Thanks!!

go for the uniqueness factor. as for less expensive, this may disappointed you, but you have to pay 19% VAT for everything

How about a jersey for a local amateur team? You may be able to find one in a neighborhood bike shop. Make sure you get the right size.

Anyone ever bought a Look (or other desirable brand) in France, used it to tour in Europe and then brought it home? I'm headed there in late Sept and would like to bring back a bike.

Cycling related or not. ? If it 's not cycling, I'd be interested in their booze. Wine is available in the US, so I'd search for many of their apertif's , that are less commonly found in the US. Stuff like fruit flavored Armagnacs or walnut liquers. They can be quite unique. . As to the cycling world. team jersey's can be found all over the world.
Now, lets say a Peugot bike straight from the factory. That would be ok. ? Huh.

For products you take out of the country, you can usually get VAT refunded at the airport on the way home.

Only jerseys from the major pro teams are easily available outside the country. Amateur, club, or bike shop jerseys are relatively unique and no one will accuse you of being a jersey pro when you wear it.

This is about the only thing cycling relates that I would get if visiting France, which I'll do at the end of this month. Just about anything else is not worth it for reasons already stated.

There's a minimum amount, and not all stores participate. I think it's around $200-$250 minimum purchase. If you buy with a credit card, you can get a cash rebate immediately at the shop, but you need to fill out a form and submit it at the airport before you leave the country, otherwise it will be billed back to your credit card.

By the way, if you feel the need to bring back some Absinthe, it's probably best not attract the attention of the US customs agents, unless you want it confiscated. Trust me on this.

I dunno'. If I didn't actually ride there, the local jersey wouldn't mean much to me.

I think we need to ask the OP why the heck he isn't going with!

For sure the best suggestion so far. I have hockey jerseys from a Swedish Elite League team (Leksand) and they are great conversation starters, in the right company of course.

Alex Singer jersey, water bottle or other accessory; 53 rue Victor Hugo:

It's not clear to me whether the accessories are available in the store.

But the store itself is worth a visit:

That's true..Jersey's can be a popular gift. . Once while on vacation I was on a bike tour in the Loire , riding about with my California Republic Jersey on my back.. We stopped at some street cafe to suck down some Orangina. A bunch of other cyclists stopped and one offered me cash for the California Republic jersey on my back.. In spite of the fact I was wearing a base layer, I said no thanks.

So did I. That's why I went parading through customs swinging my clear plastic Duty Free bag full of the stuff.

However, the nice customs lady kindly informed me that anything containing the ingredient THEYUNE is illegal in the good ol' US of A, while she was unburdening me of $45 worth of booze.

My brother-in-law is single and has a little money so he likes to take family members on trips with him. I have went to a Patriots game and Las Vegas with him, but this one is just for his sisters.

A lot of great ideas a jersey would be a goos idea as well as a Catlike. Thanks for all the great suggestions, I will have to make a list for her!!

If you do that, take a cheap bike with you and dump it in France - replace it with your new bike... that way, you avoid import tax. (Not an issue if live in the dear old EU.)
