My confrontation with a motorist...

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My confrontation with a motorist...

I was biking along today on my 22 mile "power ride." And I'm nearing the end when this teenage kid in the backseat of a car with three of his friends inside yells out the window "HEY" to jolt me. Well he did. The light up ahead goes red and they have to stop.

I grab my water bottle as I cruise up the car's back passenger side door, and thanked him for creating a possible safety hazzard. I took off the top to my water bottle and told him... "As a token of my appreciation, here is a complementary glass of 'Go **** Yourself.'" And I threw the half bottle of water in his face. I was praying that he would get out of the car so I could smash his face in. But he didn't. So I screwed the top back on the bottle, put it in it's cage and rode on. They all flipped me off when they passed me after the light went green. But they knew who their daddy was.

ah violence, the gift that keeps on giving. you realize you committed assault & battery, yes?

if i were one of the kids, right now i'd search the internet for threads like this & see if anything pops up, and if i were you, i'd delete this thread at this very moment. here's a suggestion, get a helmet mount camcorder. next time, record their plate number, call the cops, and let them deal with it. if they don't help, you can always look up the driver of the car and find out what insurance he has.

This exact thing happened to me three weeks ago, except there was a girl in the front seat. Drove by, they shouted, didn't get the jolt, but I met them at the stoplight. I rolled up to the guy in the back seat, who was pretending to tie his shoe and said, "You shout like a her," indicating the front seat passenger, then added on, "and her voice is a little too deep for a girl her age." They drove off, throwing old Sonic cups and french fry boxes out the window, cursing and flipping the bird. Ah, a generation of medicated ADD kids whose parents must be oh so proud.

why provoke when, if they are as deplorable as you described, they might as well run you off the road?

feel free to yell at a taxi driver and such as you can probably report them to the taxi & limo commission, but yelling at wild teens doesn't sound like a good idea

No, you're not a monster. But, you overreacted.

I just wonder what you thought you accomplished by throwing water in the kids face? Next time he won't harass a cyclist for fear of getting wet?

You could have at least thought of more creative line too.

Haha, I bet that felt good. I'm glad they didn't try to run you off the road after that. Maybe next time they'll leave cyclists alone.

For the people saying he shouldn't have done it and that he did something wrong. Well, you're right, but sometimes you just have to take matters in your own hands. I bet if the police were notified about the kids yelling at cyclists, they wouldn't care one bit.

that's why you get their insurance info & report them to the insurance company, which is even better if you have a video

You're both right. Undisputed 83 may have committed a crime. It would have been acceptable for him to take a picture then report the incident.

We've become a country of wussies.

Relax. Be easy. Jolted by a young dipsh*t who yelled "hey!" on your ride? I dunno, man. I'm generally too focused to be surprised by shenanigans like this. I suppose it's all relative though. Back in 1985 in my previous cycling life I was riding my mountain bike on a major blvd. in the hood and a couple of knuckleheads pulled up next to me while I was riding and the passenger punched me in the shoulder! They both turned around laughing to look at me through the rear window. I didn't flinch. Just kept rolling. Said nothing. Did nothing. Of course I never rode that route again.

i too would have been pissed real bad if that happened to me, i would want to teach them a lesson, but not to the extent of committing a crime.

Have fun when the kids see you again - and this time they're equipped with paintball guns.
