Noob tire wear question

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Noob tire wear question

I bought a CAAD9-5 that came with Vittoria Rubino Pro Slicks. My question is: how do I properly tell when its time for some new tires since there is no tread pattern (which is how I typically tell on my car/mx bike/3 wheeler)? Typically I check tread depth on the aforementioned and purchase accordingly; not sure about slicks.

Replace if:
1. you can see the casing/cords
2. they have big cuts or chunks out of the rubber
3. you keep getting flats
4. they are just looking bad
