Ebay Lunacy...
 

I find this so funny I had to share. The auction linked is for a set of USED Shimano 1056 pedals. The guy wants $60.

What's so funny? These were the 105/entry level pedal from the late 80's and were $50 brand new when I bought them back then. Earlier this year, I bought a perfect, never-used, in-the-box set off Ebay for $10 as a novelty item.

hey my pedals. Mine are still working after 15yrs am looking for new pedals though I don't real know what I want.

Note: stating bid is only $5. but the buy now is nutz.

I had these pedals and loved/rode them for 2 years until the bike was stolen in 1990. As I mentioned, I bought another set earlier this year as a novelty and put them on my beater and used them with my 15 year old shoes and cleats. Unfortunately, one of them somehow got jammed and I can't get it undone, so I'm looking for another set of cheapies.

Probably a tactic so that people will drive up the actual bid price, thinking that the $60 buy it now price is close to retail. That way, they'll feel good about spending $25 on $10 pedals.

Don't know if this helps your situation any, but when I put a set of SPD pedals on the mountain bike, one jammed and absolutely would not release. Had to take the shoe off to get out of it, after I took a tumble down a hill.

Turns out the cleat on the shoe was loose, and one of the mounting screws hanging down got jammed in the pedal's release mechanism. You might try turning the bike upside down and wiggling the shoe back and forth, that's how I finally got them unstuck.

Actually, what happened was my brother in-law tried pulling his foot straight up as opposed to twisting to the side, causing the back (pivoting) clamp to jam at a 90 degree angle. Darn thing wouldn't go back to it's original setting.

After an hour of working it, I did get it to reset, thus solving my problem. I think I'll continue using them for awhile.

That's what I want, a pedal that only releases me when it's in the mood...

I guess that's just one more reason to love Speedplays, even if you do have to turn your foot like 180 deg to get out on a normal day. (Okay, maybe not quite that much.) I can't picture a failure that would lock you in to them.

I've been using SPDs on my Mtn. bikes for years, and have never had or considered this mode of failure. Doesn't sound like much fun. I guess failure mode is something to consider when buying pedals.
