Grand Prix 4000 S Few questions for the Rider's who own them!

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Grand Prix 4000 S Few questions for the Rider's who own them!

I hear about sidewall cuts is the only down fall of the Conti Gp 4000's. Is that from you guys going 30MPh on a turn and hitting Hazards rocks and glass on the sidewall's?

If I'm not doing crazy 30 mph Turns and staying on bike trails and some city rides , I would think if I look out for glass and Crap I should try to be safe from flats?

If you ride a bike on pneumatic tires - you will never be totally safe from flats.

Pump up your tires before every ride.
Use quality tires and tubes
Watch where you're going

This will help reduce your potential for flats.

The 4000s are pretty tough tires. I've had one flat in 1,950 miles. The wear indicators on the back tire are about half gone, so they last a long time, too.

I have been running 4000's for years and I had 1 sidewall cut. They are really good tires. Best combination of speed and wear imo.

I just returned a set that had approximately 600 miles on them. Funny thing the side walls on both tires were breaking down. The threads were literally coming out of the sidewalls. Ive never had a set of tires breakdown in this fashion. Lp

I had that happen with the attack/force tire sets twice but so far no issues with the 4000's.

I switched from Spec Pro tires to the 4000s tires about 600 miles ago. I was having a flat almost every other ride with the original tires, but have not had a flat yet with the 4000s. The black compound is really tough, and also rolls well. I am happy with the change, and watching for a good sale to pick up another set. I have not had a sidewall failure with either brand tire.
Of course, as Psimet says, I (and you) will have a flat if we ride enough.

I got a sidewall blowout (not cut) in June. This was with about 1400 mi, wear-dimples showing plenty of reserve.

I think they are good tires. I've had 4 flats in 7000+ miles since going with them June 09 (mostly getting about 2500ish mi on the back, 3000ish front), which I'm satisfied with. I actually went 2400 mi before my first flat. I'll take that.

Great tires. Never had a sidewall tear. Once I had a tread tear from running over a very nasty piece of metal (can't fault that), and I had beginnings of a sidewall breakdown - with threads unraveling, like a sweater - on a set that was admittedly very past due changing (I could barely find the wear indicators because the rear was so flattened and worn).

My first flat came at about 2300 miles. I like 'em a lot.

Great tires.

Though if you're "not doing crazy 30 mph Turns and staying on bike trails and some city rides," maybe you don't need to be spending so much money on tires like the 4000s? These are kinda designed for stuff like crazy 30mph turns.

I use 4000s mixed in with my usual Attack/Force combo to replace Forces when they wear out but the accompanying front Attack still has life in it, as it's trickier and usually not cost-effective to buy single Force tires.

I've had the 4000s for over a year and about 3,500 miles. Great tires - perform well, wear well, and no flats or significant cuts. I hate typing that, though, as I'm sure I've just doomed myself to a flat on tomorrow's ride.

No it’s because the side walls wear out fast. They are great tires but durability is not their strong suit.

I use GP4000S 23mm on my single, 25mm on the Tandem. Worn through a number of them now, and I don't think I've had one die from a sidewall cut yet. ( I did destroy a brand new Attack a couple of years ago with a sidewall cut in the first 5 miles, but **** happens.)

I have some 4000S's ready to go, in the box, found them on sale in UK last winter, so I stocked up (I ordered enough $$$ to get free shipping). Why did I get them?

Because they ride nice, they are puncture resistant, and they wear for decent miles before needing to be replaced.

My one complaint: If they can sell them for $35-40 overseas, what is going on here in the USA?

I've always used Continental tires whether clincher or tubulars, although for tubulars Tufo seem to last a little longer. This is since 1994. I have to say that the black chili compound is no hype. I live in goathead country and bike around new constructions a lot. They have never let me down. I am not PCAD but I ride over 7K a year and they almost last me that long. The balk chili compound is that best ever yet. That with Continental tubes with removable stem head and a spoon of Stan's go a long way.

I use nothing but Conti 4000S. Prior to that, I used the 4000. Occassionally I switched to Mich Pro Race 3 and a couple others but always come back to the 4000.

There's no problem at all with the sidewalls and them cutting. I think the bad rap came from a long time ago with Conti 3000's. But Conti fixed that with the 4000 series.
