PSA: Why to replace your helmet.
Last week I (we) crashed at the end of our group ride. At the time, we were going at close to 30 mph (it's kind of weird to see in the graph of the ride, going from 29.6 mph to zero in an instant).
When I first inspected my helmet, I didn't see more than some scratches. Closer inspection the next day, showed some not-so-easy-to-spot full thickness cracks thru the styrofoam.
Thank God for helmets.

Examining helmets and the like a day or two after a crash helps. I've seen riders make some odd judgment-type decisions when their head gets knocked around.

When I endoed over the bars and crashed, another rider offered to finish his lap and then drive me home, but I thanked him and said it's only a few miles to walk. Since both wheels got thrashed in the crash, it was a long walk for having the bike slung over my shoulder. Might have done good to keep the joints and skin supple, though.

Those pictures make it look like you either have HUGE hands or a tiny head!
Glad you survived the crash.

I had a solo wreck about 4 weeks ago. Broke the orbital bones around my left eye in multiple places, rashed my left hip, and had a bruise from shoulder to elbow on my left side.
The very first thing I did after getting out of the emergency room was go to my LBS and buy a new helmet.
The next week in my doc's office, the nurse said "I hate to hear you crashed." When I asked her why, she said she rides 20 - 30 miles a day on the weekends but can't wear a helmet. So I had to ask why. She said that they're too hot and restrictive. I tell her that you can get helmets that are well-vented, and she says "Yeah, but they're like $100!!!"
So I pointed at my swollen eye and asked her how much her head was worth?

Thanks.
I'm adopting that policy.

Agreed...everyone would chuckle at me wearing a helmet. After surviving being rear ended by a Ford Ranger they don't think it's so funny anymore. Mine broke from temple to temple and from front to back. It also had a puncture type notch in the top side, could have been in my head instead. I've been off the bike for over 2 months now. The brace is off my back finally and i'm back to work but the Dr. said no bike riding for 3 to 6 more weeks. The end of August will be 4 wks. and I plan on going for some test rides....with a new helmet of course.

Yep, the helmet needs replacement (which I already ordered; I'm going to try a Lazer, I wasn't too impressed with Giro's replacement policy).

Wow!
Scary stuff. Again, thank God for helmets.
Glad that you guys are relatively OK.
