Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Carbon fiber fork computer install..?

I was recently given a Sigma Sport BC800 computer for free. I haven't been involved in the sport for over 4 years so I find myself playing catch up with the new bikes, components etc. I purchased a Specialized Allez Sport not long ago and wanted to install the computer. Problem is, I have a carbon fiber fork. The computer uses "rubber bands" for the install so fitting around the fork isn't the issue. The problem i'm having is that the sensor is so close to the spokes the spokes would hit the sensor. Do I have the have the sensor directly in the center of the fork? Does anyone else have any recommendations besides going wireless?

thanks a lot,
Michael

Mount the sensor in front of the fork blade if needed. There is no "centering with the fork" needed, the only important point is to have the right magnet/sensor clearance.

It doesn't have to be directly in the center, in fact on my carbon fork I have it on the back edge and it works fine.

Hi Michael, I'm a bit confused by your question. You don't need the sensor directly in the middle of the fork. What is critical is that the sensor align up with the magnet on your spoke. My sensor mount is behind the fork and angles in to the correct distance from the spoke mounted magnet. I don't see how wireless would make that easier or harder.

You can install it anywhere. I have my computer sensor mounted on the back of my fork blade about 1" below the front brake and on the back. You need to experiment, but it does not need to match up w/ the Sigma instructions diagrams.

I am hoping a day will come when there is a small built in nib with a screw hole built right into the front of the forks for mounting small sensors for computers and an internal routing up through the steerer. Thus, elimnating the need for the cheap and bulky wrap around plastic clamp that is used on all of these so called "High-tech" computers.

I really am surprised it hasn't become the standard, just as cage attachments have.
