Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2006 Trek SL 1500

Hello there,

I've decided to take the plunge and get my first road bike. I've been looking around at my LBS and am flirting with the idea of going used due to the costs. Any thoughts?

Also, I found a 2006 Trek SL 1500 (58cm) on craiglist about 30 miles away and want to seek your opinion on it. Here is the description:

2006 Trek SL 1500 Frame + Many Newer Components

This Trek SL 1550 was professionally built using new cables, housing, handlebars. Bolts were torqued to manufacturers specs. Bearings were greased, repacked or replaced as needed.
Specs: Date when component was made shown to right if known

Frame: 58cm Trek SL 1500 2006
Fork: Trek Composite 2006
Handlebars: Bontrager Race 2008
Stem: Cannondale2007
Headset Aheadset
Front Derailleur: Shimano 105 Triple
Rear Derailleur: Shimano Ultegra 9 Speed 2007

Chain: SRam PC-971 2009
Cassette: Shimano Ultegra 12-25T 2009
Brakeset: Tektro r556 2010
Shifters: Shimano Tiagra 2009 9 Speed Right. Shimano 105 Triple Left
Seatpost: Cannondal C2 Carbon
Saddle:
Pedals: Shimano SPD clipldss
Wheelset: Bontrager Select

Is this bike worth my time and is this a good deal price wise? I want to do the Seattle to Portland (STP) ride next year and need something good to train on. TIA!

How much are they charging..
How tall are you..

You need to get some fitting done before you fork over any cash. Don't buy anything until you're sure it will fit you properly. Thus, one of many benefits of buying your first bike from an LBS.

I bought this same bike new and rode it for 4 years until i recently upgraded to a TCR Advanced SL. It's a great starter bike. But the bike spec'd above does not match mine. Why are the shifters different models? Why is the stem cannondale? I had to replace my rear wheel when it began to crack but that is it and I put 15K miles on it. What happened to this bike that so many things were replaced. I wouldn't pay more than $300 for my bike now, it was only $1050 new.

I think I missed the part about the price of the bike in question. Does the bike fit? That is a pretty big bike.

$700 is way too much money for that bike. Besides, judging by the amount of the cockpit that's been replaced, I'm guessing it's been crashed at least once.
