I'll second the recommendation for the Shimano M324. My wife and I have them on our 'around town' bikes (although I almost never ride mine without the SPD shoes - even on a run to the grocery store). Take a look on the Bike Nashbar website - they have some house brand knockoffs of those pedals that will save you a couple of bucks.

BTW, I'm sold on SPD in general, and have a pair of M520s on my road bike. I've learned to ignore the sneers from the cooler riders out there.

+1 on SPD pedals and shoes.

I have M540's which have the clips on both sides....that way you don't have to fiddle with the pedal to clip in. Using Louis Garneau MTB shoes - love em!!
