I did some calculations and at 120 rpms I should be able to achieve a speed on flat ground of 51.4 mph!!!! All I need is a 60 T chain ring. I'll probably throw it on for just a special occassion. It won't be a permanent part of my bike, but will it fit?
Will it actually shift with my stock derailleur or do I need to increase my small ring size to 46?

hello
I'll have to say that you're the strongest and the mightiest cyclist that I've come across on these forums. I can't even push 53-12 at high cadence for any length of time unless I'm going downhill. All the power to ya!

aw god, we got another merton. you need to put out about 2400 watts to go that fast. wind resistance increases with the velocity squared. www.analyticcycling.com

.......I know we shouldn't encourage him any further folks!...but.....I'm prepared to be you can't 'push' 60-11 at 120 cadence for any length of time.....you sure you're feeling alright?...haven't had too much sun, perhaps dehydrated a little much.....why don't you go & have a lie down...you'll feel better tomorrow.....

...actually...i've calculated, using einsteins theory of relativity.....that if I put on a 4650-11 I can build up enough speed to go back in time & implore 53-11 alltheway's mother, not to do it!

That's like 3hp. If you can create the power of three horses pulling dead weight for 15 seconds, "YOU-AH-DA-MAN!!!"
I know a human can produce 1-2hp for very short periods of time, but 3hp?
Holy-smoke-a-roonies!!!

Keep in mind that said poster who was thinking of getting such a setup had not even owned a bike at that particular point in time.

Why not splurge and push 70T at 125 rpm?

I tryed that once, but at a little over 32 mph my pants caught on fire.

.....ahhh, but that's because you didn't have the 'flux capacitator' on the DeLoren adjusted properly.........

Yes I can pedal 53-11 on flat ground for over 20 minutes (with some minor coasting) at a cadence of 100 to 110.
I think it will be possible to hit the 60-11 gears for 10-15 seconds. It's less than 15% more gearing...what's the big deal?
My legs have the power!!! I can leg press 1100 lbs for eight reps.
I might have to fine tune my aerodynanmics package.
Maybe I'll get some 180mm cranks while I'm at it.
This was not meant to be a joke.

You're saying you can sustain 45mph for nearly half an hour on a road bike, just making sure I'm reading you right.

It doesn't work out to 45mph....more like 35 mph.
Seriously people this shouldn't be that hard.
You need:
1. Seriously good tires.....high TPI high psi tubulars will do the trick.
2. 180mm crankarms for increased leverage....may work with my 175mm's.
3. Appropriate gearing....

53x11 @ 120 RPM with 700x20 tires = 45 mph.
60x11 @ 120 RPM with 700x20 tires = 50.9 mph.
60x1 @ 120 RPM with 700x20 tires = 559.9 mph.
Wait wait, let's skip all that and analyze the statement that going from 35mph to 55mph "isn't too hard."
