suggestions for new computer

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

suggestions for new computer

just lost my ravx computer after it popped out of its holder and exploded under a car tire. great little computer and i'd get another one but i'm concerned the holder will have the same problem.

i was on nashbar and saw the Cat Eye MC100W and wondered if anyone on here owned one? if not, any suggestions for another?

i would like wireless with the basic functions current speed, max speed, avg speed, distance, ride time, backlight, clock, etc. although cadence isn't all that important even though i know a lot of you will cry foul on that. needs to be pretty bulletproof and somewhat water resistant too. thanks!

I've got the MC100W. It rocks. If you can live without cadence, and right now I can, it's hard to beat it. I've had it for 2.5 years, and it's been through rain and snow and survived with no probs. Good battery life, super easy to use/install. The backlight is kind of crap, but who cares. For the money it's hard to beat it.

I liked that one a lot but now it's sitting at home unused. I'm looking into a refurb Garmin 305 because I want to get into a training regimen and would like cadence and HR. The backlight on mine doesn't work but the computer is pretty accurate and I like the smaller size and wireless design. It's a good buy.

The one beef I have is the mount - be sure that you have an inch or inch and a half on the bars (stem mounting is poor) where it is flat or else only one ziptie will hold well and it will keep sliding around. Otherwise it is very secure. I put some electrical tape on the bottom of the mount (just taped to the mount with the non-sticky side toward the bar) and it never moved.

I have to say, with mine stem mounting has worked fine. It's been secure for the whole time I've had it, and I actually added a second stem mount to one of my other bikes, which has a different stem, and still no problem. What was the problem when you tried it on the stem?

well the mount is rounded for bar mounting but not for stem mounting on mine. It was just my experience that there was not enough surface contact area to keep it in place.

I've got the blackburn delphi because it had cadence and altitude and heart rate but after using it for a while, i realise i hardly look at cadence and altitude and the cadence is wired. I think it was a bit overkill.

The Garmin Edge 500 is very good, but it costs more than standard cyclocomputers.

do you have a square stem?

yeah anything garmin is a bit out of my price range. prob should have mentioned my price range though (>$70)

Are you talking about the mount coming loose from the stem, or the computer itself popping out of the mount? regardless, I've never had a problem with either. If you want, I can try to snap a couple of pics when I get home and post on this thread. Lemme know.

I have a round stem. If you look at the mount you'll see what I mean. It's very small though (the computer) so it really isn't all that intrusive or ugly at all when sitting beside the stem on the bars. I've never had mine come loose unless I removed it. The mount would rotate around the bars as it worked down the tapered area, but on the round Bontrager bars with a consistent diameter, it never moved.

Hey if you wouldn't mind that would be great! Especially if I could get a sense of scale.

I had my last one mounted on my stem and it seemed to work pretty good. (my 2 lights are attached to the bars on either side of the stem so i have no room) Would this one fit on the stem as well? Ritchey bars, Forte PRO stem.

OK, these didn't come out as well as I'd hoped, but it's what I've got. This is the mount on my Roubaix Elite's Comp stem (the mount on the bars is for my light):

For comparison, this is the same computer mount on the bars (Salsa) of my Surly Cross Check with (the stem is too short for it, so it's on the bars). It's the mount on the left side:

Hope that helps!

Dude you rock. That's perfect. Had the same setup as you with the mount on my stem. I have a 90mm on my road bike so that should be just big enough. I think we might even have the same light. Cat Eye EL320? Light is awesome. Any chance you could show one of the computer mounted? If not no big deal, you've already helped me enough. Thanks again!

Cateye Strada Double Wireless if you want cadence or the Cateye Strada wireless for a normal comp. Both are EXCELLENT computers that I've used over thousands of miles with no trouble.

Have you considered a powermeter. Might be a good time to get one.

Yep. The Stradas are awesome for simple bike computers.

I just picked one up and installed it this week, it rocks. Love being able to upload everything to Garmin Connect.

Sure thing. Sometime tomorrow probably. Agree with the others about the Strada though. Sooner or later I'll upgrade to that, but for now this one is still going strong.

I have the micro wireless and it works great. I'm not super familiar with it yet, but for $30 I'm not complaining.

@kbtommy

ok, that makes sense now... I didn't get that little piece you have on there for the stem... either that or the LBS guy kept it and never put it back in the box after installing it (bought it on a new bike and it was free install so I said why not...). I wish I had that piece because I would love to mount it on my stem. Maybe I'll see if I can order one and mount this thing back up until I can find another 305 refurb for $200 on Amazon.
