Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey Jerseyites!

I am spending a few days next week on the Shore for work. Silver Lake/Belmar area. How is the road riding in the area? Just trying to decide if I should bring the bike or not.

Bring the bike, some really nice county roads with rolling hills if you go away from the shore. Riding near the shore you will deal with lots of traffic and straight flat roads. Good thing is wind is always blowing.

Its Spring Lake not Silver Lake . Silver Lake is on the border of Newark and Belleville and sends its share of guidos to belmar. You can get up early and head north or south on Ocean ave and get in a nice ride or head west on 524 {Atlantic Ave **about as far as you want. If you google the area theres a nice trip out around the Manasquan Reservoir thats not too hard to follow.

Bring the bike ... even along the beach, roads are o.k. for leisure rides.

Check with a LBS about some good rides, because there are plenty of county roads to get a good fast ride on. I don't know the roads well near Spring Lake/Belmar, but Monmouth County does have some very nice areas to ride in just a few miles west of the beach areas.

Check out the area around Allaire State Park near Farmingdale. A ride from Belmar to Allaire S.P. is probably 15 - 20 miles round trip.

That area is great for the beach but sh1tty for riding. Get west as quickly as possible- lots of good roads near Allaire/Wall/etc. on up towards Holmdel.

Personally Id get up at 6 am and ride north on Ocean ave to Sandy hook and back. You can cut in on the boardwalk in Bradly and Ocean Grove to Asbury so you dont have to go around. If ridden early during the week Ocean ave is both beautifull and relatively safe.

Well, Monday was wet so just did a beach tour. The roads were empty as were the beaches but it was still enjoyable.

I did the ride above but extended it to Freehold to get in a few extra miles. Pretty area for riding and sure beat sitting around the hotel room on BF!

Thanks for the suggestions.
