Upgrading Sora?
Hello all. I'm a new poster, but have been reading a while.
I currently ride a 9 speed Specialized Allez with a mix of sora and tiagra. I have been considering upgrading to either sram rival or force.
Would I just need to get the sram shifters, cassette, chain, and derailleurs?
Also, I eventually want to buy a better frame (meaning like a year from now). Would these parts last long enough to make the switch? The only reason I'm thinking of upgrading now is to sort of ease myself into it money-wise and if I would be best waiting until I get a new frame to get new components then that is what I would do.
Thanks for any input

I would just wait until you can afford a new bike, then sell the Allez. I would not bother upgrading that bike.

I agree with anfieldmx5, best to set aside the money you have and wait to purchase a new bike. If you absolutely want to go through with it though, you will need to buy shifters, cassette (10-speed), chain (10-speed) and a rear derailleur (all front derailleurs are compatible).

Save your money, get a new bike with the components you want. Unless you like to wrench as therapy or hobby then go for it. And yeah, those parts will last long enough for your next frame, heck, even the Sora group will last through your next frame.

How long have you owned the Allez?? New cables and a good lube will make your tranny work like new. Then you can save your money for that bike.

This is the minimum you need:
1. Shifters*
2. Chain
3. Cassette.
*good idea to replace the cables while you're at it, not required.
The front and rear 9-speed derailleurs and the original chainrings will work perfectly fine with 10 speed. I know, because I used it this way.
If you can get this stuff for about $300 on ebay, then it's worth it.
I also eventually upgraded the cranks (triple to double) for $70 (105 level) and the the rear derailleur from med cage to short cage since I no longer had a triple.

Larkin,
In case you are interested. I did that this weekend. Here is my review.

I think f4arrest did a smart thing for using a 105 crank. The cranks and shifters are the most expensive components. If you have time you can pick-up pieces here and there like I did and find good deals on craiglist or ebay. I think it took me like 3-4 months to get all the parts. I was not in any hurry.
