How did I get all these wheels?

Notices
Road Cycling It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. -- Ernest Hemingway

How did I get all these wheels?

13 months ago, I had zero road bike wheels. Now I have 8. If any of you are new to cycling or returning to cycling, be warned that you may wake up one day with more wheels than an 18 wheeler.

New road bike (ebay / 2008 TCR advanced 9 speed)

Wheel count = 2 (1F, 1R)

Next, I bought a Powertap. I am glad I own it, but I need to fix a loose spoke.

Wheel count = 3 (1F, 2R)

New cross bike (10 speed). For myself, I think Bikesnob gives good advice about owning too many bikes. Because of him, I own 2, not 3+. But this has caused me to buy a new front wheel so that my cross bike can run the conti speedkings for offroad and conti 4 seasons for a 40+ mile commute. Since the Powertap is on the road bike, I moved the unused rear wheel to the cross bike.

Wheel count = 6 (3F, 3R)

I broke my derail hanger a few months back when the chain lodged itself between the cassette and the spokes. Being cheap, I kept riding this non-powertap wheel. Tuesday one of these drive side spokes broke.

At this point, I only have 1 good rear wheel that is setup for riding offroad on the cross bike. With zero time to fix the other wheels or even drop off the wheel at the shop. My wife (housewife) does NOT like doing bike shop errands for me! Also, I didn't want to do the whole tire/cassette switchover and then back again. When I got home, I went online (neuvation) and ordered a new rear wheel. I wish I would have slept on it first.

Wheel count = 7 (3F, 4R)

Weds night, I bought a Forte Apollo rear wheel at the local Performance store. I have 3 group rides that I really don't want to miss. I am an addict. As before, no time to get to a bike shop and wait for the repair. Now I have a neuvation rear wheel being shipped to my house and no need for it. One day I will be glad I have it, but right now it's a waste of money.

Wheel count = 8 (3F, 5R)

They tend to accumulate. I've got:

a set of Dura Ace wheels (came with the TCR);

a set of Zipp 404 clinchers (wanted a nice set of wheels that still could be ridden everyday)

a Pt laced to a Zipp 404 (to train and race with power)

a set of Zipp 303 tubulars (for racing)

a Hed Disc and trispoke for time trials

a set of MavicOpen PRo/Ultegra (bought to do a "roubaix style race" and to tour on )

So 11 wheels, before we get to the tandem and the track bike.

No you shouldn't. Extra wheels are always good. They keep you riding even if your main pair are trashed.

same situation here.

one thing is for sure though, its better to have too many wheels that to not be able to ride when you pop a spoke, dent a rim, whatever.

I think mine breed in the basement. I've got a bunch of vintage wheels from the old days and 4-5 pairs of 10 speed wheels. The problem is thay are all in-bred, so no fancy carbons.

Nice... I'm too poor to have more than one wheelset per bike. I only have two bikes and two sets of wheels now.

i've got 3.5 bikes and 12 wheels lol.

wheels:
- 2 Zipp 808s (for tris)
- 2 stock Mavic wheels (came w/ tri bike)
- 2 Shimano ?? road wheels (came w/ road bike)
- 2 Alex wheels (heavy&sturdy for every day training)
- 2 ??? road wheels for the fixed gear
- 2 ??? wheels w/ ???? on/offroad hybrid tires for fixie (w/ single speed hub)

bikes:
- triathlon
- road
- fixie gear
- road bike frame w/ no components (the 0.5 bike)

i plan on adding a nice carbon road bike as well as a "entry level" mountain bike in early 2011. with those 4 wheels i'll also hopefully be adding some PSIMET carbon clinchers to the stable.
lol. i have too many bikes considering i use 2 of them for 99% of my riding.
