Relax. It's not what you fear.

Bike Racing for Beginners: How to get started

1. Find some group rides, fast group rides. Sit in the back.
2. Don't get discouraged if/when you get dropped from those group rides.
3. Go back the following week and do the fast group ride again.
4. If you're dropped a 2nd time, repeat steps 2 & 3
5. Once you're comfortable with the group and pace (and vice versa), take some pulls.
6. Once you're comfortable taking pulls, try some attacks (if it's that kind of group ride).
7. Once you're comfortable with steps 5 & 6, it's time to enter a race.
8. At your first race, repeat steps 1-6, but substitute 'race' for 'group ride'.

I was able to average 20.5 for the ride, hanging with the guys that have been doing this for years. People are saying maybe I should look into racing, I'm 16 right now, 17 in about a week and a half. (Not that it effects my skills) any other opinions? I'm just curious what people think :]

20.5 avg could be awesome fast or just fast (for a club kinda ride...) depending on the ride terrain and the riders you;re mixin it with.

It's not what they say, it's what you want to do?
nobody ever loses from 'tryin'. If you give it a real honest try, you'll find bike racing is a lot of hard work, dedication and learning to believe in yourself. All of which is great no matter how 'good' a racer you become.
Bike racing is a no-bull**** prospect. Doesn't mean that your hard work will be well rewarded, it means that if you don;t do the work, there's no prayer of reaching anything.
If you don;t let yourself get too hooked into the Bikie-Bling/Glam thing, you'll even find that you can do a lot more than you think, and totally surprise yourself.
I like all the Juniors who ride in our club. They work hard, they ride hard, they hang close and support each other and they seem a lot better adjusted to eventually becoming adult.
Real Important if you can - find and join a local riding/racing club which has a Junior program. This will go a long way to making it happen for you.
and for some, racing just doesn't work, but they still luv the ride... it's all good

That's great advice.

Somehow I was thinking it was like:

Pain followed by more pain and some more pain.

Pain followed by shattered dreams followed by bitterness and regret.

The whole time being surrounded by self-absorbed idiots.

I'm glad I was wrong.
