Garmin Edge 500 Data Fields

I just picked up my Edge 500 and I'm fiddling with what fields to show on what pages. I'm curious how others have it set up. Also, any reasoning for how you have it set up (or why you have what on what page) as well as why you might omit any parameters would be helpful too.

I just got one too. First page with data such as time, speed, heart rate, cadence, temperature. Another with the heart rate graph, heart rate, zone, average heart rate, and percent of max. The third has speed, gradient, heart rate, cadence, distance. Basically I use the first page for standard information, the second when I'm working hard, and the third when I'm climbing (although I did the Deer Creek Challenge yesterday and used the second page a lot when I was climbing too).

It seems like a pretty cool gadget so far!

I have the standard page

when I'm training use a page with watts, average watts and time

When I'm racing I have either distance (if road race) or time (if crit) and really nothing else- I don't want to be distracted/freaked about by a 195 HR or 500 watts when I'm just trying to hold wheels. I just collect the data to look at later on WKO.

On page 1, I have my ongoing ride summary:
- Total ride time
- Total distance
- Current speed
- Current Power
- Average power
- Cadence
- HR
- Gradient

On screen 2, I have my interval-specific training display:
- Lap time
- 3s power
- Average power for the lap
- Cadence
- HR
- Gradient

Screen 3 I dont use yet.

On my 705, I use:

Screen 1: total time, total distance, current power (3 sec avg), heart rate, heart rate zone, speed, and time of day, and cadence
Screen 2: lap time, speed, heart rate, current power (3 sec avg), avg lap power

I use screen 1 for most riding, screen 2 for interval work. I'm thinking I might replace HR or speed with cadence on screen 2.

chadwick 08-30-10 02:34 PM

I have Power - 3s avg & cadence on page 1 - the important data when doing an interval workout with no distractions (like say, heart-rate, which just makes me go slow when I see it). Page 2 is time, distance, etc. Page 3 I've left to be that default climbing page.

nachomc 08-30-10 02:45 PM

Screen one is:

Speed / HRM / Cadence / Time / Time of Day / Avg Speed / Distance

Screen two is the same except Cadence is swapped with grade and avg speed with elevation.

I use screen one for road riding, and time of day is critical for riding to work and such. Screen two is for mtb.

grwoolf 08-30-10 03:10 PM

screen 1:

Power Zone 3sec Power
speed avg watts
distance HR
duration Cadence

Screen 2 (pretty much the same, but average watts for lap instead of entire ride)

Screen 3 -

Time
Avg Speed
Kilojoules
Avg cadence
feet climbed
HR Average
Temp
? - cant' remember last thing

caloso 08-30-10 03:19 PM

Screen 1: (4 fields) speed; time; distance; HR (for general riding around)

Screen 2: (3 fields) HR; cadence; speed (for SS intervals)

Screen 3: (5 fields) HR graph; max speed; calories; grade %; time of day (for whatevers)

lovestoride 08-30-10 03:26 PM

i have a edge 705, but my genreal riding screen is time hr cadence speed and distance. Then intervals are just hr cadence speed (depends where the intervals are being completed) and time.

Screen 3: All the stuff that relates to the entire ride: Ex., Average Speed, Distance, Total Time, etc.

Here's a good reference for you: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/04/c...ta-fields.html

I only use my first screen - might start playing around with the second screen / gradient display (on a side note - how hard is it to retrieve gradient after a ride? Garmin Connect doesn't have much...)

Garmin Training Center records the gradient and you can throw it up on a graph with other stuff.

It has a huge graph of elevation that you can see over heart rate, cadence, speed, etc...

Jason S 08-30-10 06:35 PM

Garmin Connect and GTC can show you gradient. I happen to like the way mapmyride.com shows elevation / grade (even though they are absolutely RIDDLED with ads and is very cluttered). Here's a screenie:

I totally changed mine around based on the feedback above, a couple blogs (thanks for the link), equipment I have now, and what I think I will / might want in the future (to leave some room for additional data down the _ahem_ road).
For those interested, my current data page setup (subject to change, of course) is as follows:

Page 1 (8 parameters with the idea that I will remove one* as I get accustomed to HR)
Time | Distance
Speed | Avg Speed
HR* | HR Zone
Avg Lap Time | Time of Day

Page 2 (5 parameters - hills)
HR Graph
Grade | HR Zone
Elevation | Total Ascent

Page 3 (6 parameters - summary / less critical general)
Avg Speed
Max Speed
Avg HR | Calories
Avg Cadence | Temperature

All times are GMT -6. The time now is 06:14 PM.
