Road shoe vs Mountain shoe ???

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road shoe vs Mountain shoe ???

I'm starting to look into going clip less. I just don't know which route to take, I'm aiming more for road though since I don't walk around while riding.

Pros and cons of each ?

Which do you prefer ?

Road shoes are lighter and can be used with road pedals and some have the two hole pattern for mountain bike pedals. They're usually stiff soled shoes and make it harder to walk around in.

Mountain bike shoes are more versatile off the bike. Obviously you can walk around, however you may be limited to mountain type pedals. Mountain bikes are usually heavier and may not be as stiff as road shoes. However, shoes are so stiff now, they won't make much of a difference.

Bikes: Some bikes. Hell, they're all the same, ain't they?

If I'm going to spend a lot of time off the bike -- mountain shoes (or casual shoes, or sandals, all SPD-compatible).

If I'm going to spend most, or all, of the time ON the bike -- road shoes (or stiff MTB shoes).

There are a few pedal systems out there that let you use either kind of shoe, too. I was using Crank Brothers (as one example) for their versatility; basic two-bolt cleat on MTB shoes and their Quattro 3-bole cleat on road shoes. That way, my destination didn't dictate my bike choice.
