Damn you Presta removable core!
For the second time in a year I have found my bike with a front tire flat due to, after inspection, a loose presta removable core. Both times after 60+ miles rides. I don't care for these. I'd rather take my chances with a hardwired valve than to add an extra moving part to fail. And while I'm at it, I don't like the threaded stems either. Curses!

No experience with the removable valve but I agree about disliking threaded valves.

As a Road Tubeless user, we pretty much only use threaded valve cores. No problem at all. You just need to make sure it's tight, like anything else on the bike. It's nothing more than standard maintenance.

The worst is finding out your tube has a removable core AFTER you've pumped it up to 120psi using a tiny, crappy micro pump - you learn this when your tube deflates as the removable core has come off when you were trying to unscrew the over-engineered POS Lezyne chuck from the valve. When it happens a few times, you discover a whole new level of frustration. Just sayin'.

Removable valve cores serve a couple of functions. One, you can put tire sealant in the tube. Two, you can use the better valve extenders with them.
That said, we had our own problem with a removable valve core Saturday. Flatted front and back. We were riding Zipp 808's and one of the replacement tubes didn't want to play well with the Zipp valve extender. So I got the bright idea to remove the extender from the front wheel,and swap it out in the back. Unfortunately the valve core came out with it. Ended up going through 3 C02 cartridges, and had to use a mini pump which then lead to breaking the valve extender off below the rim. It was a complete comedy of errors. |
