I posted this because in the past 27 years that I've been into bikes, I never, ever heard of them referred to a 'build'. I have built 5 or so high-ish end road/racing bikes and maintained them and my wifes. ( Schwinn Paramount, Vitus, sevetral Trek OCLV, Litespeed Vortex, Litespeed Archon, Litespeed MTB). Would you ever say do someone, " Nice build " about their bike or "I used to have a build similar to yours." Doesn't work for me but I do support free speech.

Nouning verbs is becoming more common now...
Blame internet/textspeak.
Instead of "This is the latest bike I'm building", it has become "This is my latest build".

OK I got that now. Makes sense. I haven't raced or been involved a team in many years so I'm out of the loop.

I don't mind somebody saying bike. Bicycle is more descriptive. A Motorcycle is also a bike.
I sometimes slip up and refer to a saddle as a seat. I hope I haven't offended anyone with my mistake.

i like this thread. it is like the grumpy old man thread. let's have a good whinge about anything that irritates us.
don't you just hate it when a saddle feels good for a certain distance and then for a bit further it will hurt.

Building a fixie, as many of you have seen, is %90 of the time a disaster. Mismatched parts, bad colour combinations etc. When you buy some parts and assemble them into a bike and the take a picture, post it - most of the time people offer advice as to what is wrong with your "build" since you chose components that don't work in their eyes.
I personally don't have a problem with build. A bike that is build custom should have some thought put into it with correct componentry and design, etc.
So if we're talking "build" let's hash out "colorway", "mashup", "collabo" while we're at it.

How ridiculous would it sound if a football player said, "I'm headed to the locker room to put on my kit?"

Man, last night I was working on my build in my garage wearing just a set of bibs. Usually I do all my wrenching in a full team kit. Neighbors don't get it for some reason.

When playing football.
What about when your jumping into bed with the lady "Come on then, get yer' kit off!"
