Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

24k ft this weekend!

Last training push this weekend before Everest. Going tomorrrow to Santa Barbara to get in ~16k ft and then ~8k on Sunday back in Santa Monica. Tomorrow's route to include OSM/Painted Cave (2x?), Gibraltar, Stagecoach, East Camino Cielo and West Camino Cielo.

Can't wait! Weather should be nice....

Needs more elevation.

Where heading from Santa Monica? suggestion: head up Topanga Canyon and Fernwood to Saddle Peak and descend Piuma with it's new surfacing. It's like an amusement park ride, with padded shorts! Stunt is also resurfaced. Very pleasant climbing and descending. Also, a lengthy portion of Mulholland west of Malibu Canyon Rd was recently redone.

You probably know all that.

KiddSisko - care to join me on Sunday for part of my ride? I need motivation. I'm thinking of doing Saddle Peak three times with at least 1 ascent of Las Flores or Tuna. I didn't know that Stunt and Piuma were done yet. I haven't been on them in a few weeks. Been doing Las Flores and Tuna repeats instead, combined with Latigo/Decker/Deer Creek and the occasional Baldy and Ojai routes.

umd- I'm planning on bringing 3 20-oz gatorades, bloks, a pb&j. Hopefully the refill locations will be sufficient throughout the ride.

I can meet up on Sunday, but I WON'T be doing Saddle Peak repeats, and would not do Tuna or Las Flores. LOL. I'll go up Topanga/Fernwood with you, starting at PCH. I don't know where I'll go from there. Depends on how I feel after the first jaunt up to Saddle Peak. I often head west along Mulholland for a trip up Rock Store, but that would be more miles than climbing for you. If you want to ease into the climbing, instead of Fernwood we can head up Old Topanga, go west along Mulholland and hook around to head up either Piuma or Stunt. We'll PM on Saturday night to finalize and synchronize times.

Have a great Saturday!

Wow! The vast majority of climbers try Everest in May, before the monsoons. Going for it in October would put you in the elite of the elite. I'd love to hear how cycling prepared you for a big mountain. I've always trained by running and lugging heavy packs up steep grades in winter, but I've never had a go of it in the Himalayas. I'm jealous. Good luck!

??? The OP says he's training for Everest by riding a bike. Pretty novel training technique, but very cool if it works. He deserves our best wishes, especially for trying a summit outside the usual climbing season.

Impressive. I have just over 10k for the year. But then the I-95 overpass is the biggest hill for miles around here.

We just got back. I had a little extra cimbing from coming back down from each peak and riding back up with Ben, so I got home with 15.2K, and he went and did another partial climb to get his to tick over 15K while I relaxed at home and made a recovery drink

Some pics:

The "paradise store" where we refilled out bottles (with ice!), and had a snack.

I had 3 1/2 Clif bars, a banana, a bottle of Perpetuem (3 scoops), and roughly 7-8 bottles of water or other water-like drinks.
