Did I get fooled???
Hey everybody! I got a CAAD9 less than a week ago and I just noticed something .
On my LBS's website the specs say that the bike is supposed to have a 10 speed rear cog set: http://helenscycles.com/product/spec...le-58749-1.htm But the bike I got only has 9 sets of gears in the back. Should I tell the shop to replace me rear cogs and put a 10 speed in? Or should I just keep the bike? Thanks! |
That makes no sense. Tiagra is a 9sp group so your shifters and RD will not work with a 10sp cassette. You have the correct cassette on your bike.

"Rear Derailleur Shimano Tiagra" Tiagra is a 9 speed groupset. It wouldn't work with a 10 speed cassette (or at least not work well). I suspect someone did a bad copy-paste-edit job on their website, and indeed the listed SRAM PG-950 is a 9 speed cassette. |

You should be able to pull up Cannondale's data on the bike as well, and I assume it would be correct (although subject to change as well.)

In some places the seller has to suck it up per false-advertising laws. If 10 speeds is superior to 9 speeds, which it is, a bike shop can't advertise Tiagra "10 speed" if that is false. For example, you may not have been a product-knowledgeable consumer, and saw "10 speed" and said, "I want that." The law in some states is, a retailler cannot "exaggerate" product performance. If he does, it's considered duping the consumer, in essence it is considered making a false exaggeration to lure in consumers under false pretenses. Check your state's consumer laws. You might get an option of a discount on what you bought, or 105 with 10 cogs, or a refund offer.
If you've ridden the components and they have wear, the shop that takes the bike back will have to sell it used, so you have some leverage, particularly on the first option. If the seller changed it's description to 9 speed, you have to prove they originally listed it at 10 speed. If you can do that, you're set, because you can show they exaggerated, which is an implicit admission of their false-advertising. On the other hand, if you can't prove they did this, they can argue they sold different groups, and accurately described each of them to you, and you just got confused. Which could have happened. |
If this is Helen's in Santa Monica, go back and insist on speaking directly with Nick. He's responsible for all that, and would really appreciate you telling him exactly what you think of this situation. I'm sure he'll do whatever it takes to keep you a satisfied customer.

OP, it basically boils down in Cali, you can only advertise what you are actually selling, with a reasonable expectation by the consumer. A 10-spped cassette with a 9-speed brifter doesn't make sense, but as a consumer, you didn't have to know that. The seller was required to know that, particularly because a 10 speed cassette and a 9-speed brifter will not work together--the brifter/cog-spacing ****s are different.
According to your posted webvertisement, they were offering a 10 speed cassette. If they sold a 10-speed cassette, you had a right to expect 10 useable rear cogs. Which isn't doable with a 9 speed brifter. In actuality the odds are 99+% plus the cassette only had 9 cogs, because there is no way to get smooth shifting with a 9-speed brifter with 10 cogs--the cable/gear spacing doesn't work, but even if you were willing to put up with this, 1 cog would be out-of-range. (Friction shifters are a different story, was the rear shifter set up in friction mode, rather than click- indexed?) Helen's Cycles options are either: A) Give you a discount (which could be accessories) that satisfies you, B) Install a 10 speed 105 brifter and 10 speed cog, or C) give you a refund. |

Did you get the bike from the website or the store? Which store? If you picked it up from the store, I don't see why you couldn't have known it was 9 speed? If so, it wasn't "advertised" anywhere. Gawd, I hate doing Nicks work for him... |
I got the bike from the store in Arcadia. Yeah I know I should have checked everything, but I was too excited about getting a new bike.

It seems they made a typo about how many cogs were there, and the cassette model number is listed (and corresponds to a nine speed model). It also sounds like you have been happy with the bike and noticed this information on their site after the fact.
Regardless, IMO, if you call and make a stink about it, that's pretty lame, and I hope that to 'correct' the problem they just slap a 10-speed cassette on there and send you on your way. That should be fun. |
It's clear that the OP didn't make his decision to buy the bike based on the bike has a 10 speed cassette. Therefore, if he's happy about the bike and with Tiagra, why not just enjoy the bike. Just call the bike shop and let them know they have a typo, and leave it at that.
Not every LBS is trying to rip you off, nor should their every little mistaken be taken advantage of for refunds, discounts, etc. |
Yeah I don't really want to go through the hassle of returning the bike. It's already a awesome bike and I don't think one more gear will make much of a difference.
