Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm not going to be able to do back to back 140's this weekend. The only day I have off is Monday. So I will probably ride up to Orono with my girlfriend (She goes to school up there), and I will bike home on Monday. Then the following weekend, I will bike up there sunday, hang out with her all monday and spend that night, and use a paid time off day on tuesday to bike back. And that will likely be the last trip up there that I ever do, because she is transfering down here next semester. So those are my tentative plans.

My bike is going in the shop tomorrow to have a new cable put in for my front derailer and to have it adjusted. It quit on me with 30 miles to go yesterday. So I should have that back by friday at the latest.

Try reading this. You don't have to use their products, but their advice is very good from my experience.

Dude, if you're going to make a practice of going on long unsupported rides, you need to bone up on your mechanical skills because all kinds of shti will happen when you spend lots of time on the road. If that would have been the cable for your RD instead of the FD, you would have been stuck in your smallest cog. Swapping cables is literally a 2 minute job, and even if a cable breaks on the road and you have no spare, there are options that will keep you going in a comfortable gear.

Get this book. Hold it close to your heart and know it. It takes little knowledge and even less in terms of tools to address the vast majority of problems. Plus, you will save loads of time and cash.

If you want to score points with your GF, don't let her know about the book. Just learn how your bike works and how to fix almost everything using stuff that easily fits into a tiny seat pack.

If you ever have to call for help, your GF and/or mom will be out there in a jiffy to bail you. But it will also make them worry. To make matters worse, they'll share these concerns with others and everyone will try to dissuade you from more ambitious plans in the future rather than encouraging you. Much better for them to believe you can deal with anything anywhere using materials at hand.

Prepackaged bars don't really taste like food to me. Also, will save you some cash.

I only need a new cable because I tried fixing it myself. And then I frayed it. My bad.
