I don't understand why people draft strangers ad hoc. If you want to ride in a group and draft, you ride with a group. If you want to ride by yourself to train you do so - hooking up with random strangers, especially without permission, is creepy and bizarre. You're not improving your condition by drafting; if anything it's saving you effort. It's not a race so why do you want to save effort? You might be improving your drafting skillz but that should be practiced between consenting adults.

You'll still get plenty of training. Just ride the bulk of the ride a little faster. |

You should never draft without getting permission because: Today's ride I get a couple hundred yards ahead of the group so I'm soft pedaling and get behind a guy on a beach cruiser. We're doing 8-10 mph and I creep up on him until I'm a foot or so from his wheel. A young lady is walking by on the sidewalk so he waves and says "Hi, xxx!". She knows him and starts talking to him. She's also smoking hot and I'm looking at her and not paying attention as the guy hits his brakes so he can chat and......I have to do a panic swerve to avoid hitting him and looking like a total fool. Of course, by then my friends saw the whole thing and were laughing their asses off.

Generally I get drafted on the more mundane, boring, urban 15-20 miles of any ride. It's just transportation to get to/from the pleasant portions. Drafting cuts down on the tedious parts.

I want to thank you guys for being polite in explaining this to me. I never saw that as a unwanted move . Always saw it as a way to make a new friend while riding.
Yes 100% of the time i thanked them for the pull. No one has ever blown snot on me, thank god. I'll pull one of mine and post it in your forehead.LOL I was always consious of the safety issue and knew what the out come would be. I never saw it as creepy move either. Well ,maybe down a lonely road. Where i'm talking about there are hundreds of riders on the weekend, its in Key biscayne Miami. Very true about getting a better workout by not letting anyone pull me. My fat ass needs that. Thanks again |
Maybe not "unethycal" but there was the appearance of impropriety. Can we get a congressional inquiry?
|
Edited the title, "unethycal" just didn't work for some reason. :D

+1 :thumb: . I dont like it when someone unknown to me jumps my wheel and I certainly dont do it to others. On top of showing bad manners I think it can be somewhat dangerous. When a stranger is on your wheel are you supposed to call out obstuctions etc? And if your approaching a dangerous intersection are you supposed to call out or signal that your slowing ? These are things I expect to do while riding with a group but not while alone.
|
At the very least, announce you're back there. I don't mind people drafting me, but I want them to at least give me a heads up. I will know that you're on my wheel whether you say it or not, I just consider it somewhat rude that you hopped on after getting passed without saying anything.
In general, if you don't have the courtesy to announce that you are on my wheel and thus a potential hazard to me, don't expect me to have the courtesy to announce that there are potential hazards on the road (or for me to avoid them instead of bunny hopping them :innocent:). |

Drafting someone is like tailgaiting on the freeway, but even closer. We do it with people we know and trust, but some people may not be comfortable doing it with strangers. I don't know why it is a hard concept to understand that some people may not want to participate, as either the draftee or drafter.
What about when you are riding by yourself and someone passes you; then proceeds to slow down again? This is not racing; if someone is behind me drafting me (which I doubt because I am slow) then fine. Either work harder to get them off your tail (in most cases this shouldn't take very long, since you passed the slower rider who is now following you) or move over; wait a bit and proceed. There are no ethics here. Plus as cyclists; shouldn't you be aware of whose around you? |
I had a funny situation like this yesterday. I was riding a century with one of my friends and we were going into a pretty strong headwind. I had just started my pull and this guy comes up and jumps asks my friend if he can jump on his wheel. My friend says sure. About a minute into my pull, new guy yells up to my friend, ''That's good, that's enough for me.''
It was nice that he asked. Though, I wish he could have hung on a bit longer, we could have used another guy in the rotation. |

Im from Miami, too, and this happens here all the time. I dont mind it too much, but if you take my wheel without saying anything, Im not taking responibility for your safety, either (calling out debris, potholes, etc).
What annoys me is when me and a buddy are riding, stranger takes our wheel, drafts us for several miles, then as we approach a common gathering spot, sprints out ahead of us, to prove some sort of point. DUDE, NO **** YOUR LEGS ARE FRESH, WE JUST DRAGGED YOU LAZY ASS THE WHOLE WAY! lol people down here are very aggressive and cometitive in even the most mundane of situations. LAtin machismo influence, i guess. |

that happens often when people do solo interval training. Fly by, then you cruise past them. Nothing wrong with it. This seems more like a personal peeve of yours than anything else.

Let's put it into terms that BFers can understand:
Scenario: You are jogging, and you see this smoking hot chick up the road, also jogging. Appropriate: Catch up and ask: Hey, mind if I join you for a bit? If rejected, tell yourself it's her loss. Inappropriate: Catch up and jog inches behind her while staring at her behind, and when she is creeped out, say: What, you've never heard of drafting? |

Hello everyone!
So i went riding today and i'm going about 18mph (i'm on a mtb BTW with knobby tires) and these two roadies pass me at 21 or so . So i get on their wheel, about two miles later one of the guys turns to me says. You know what you're doing is unethical? I said, What is? He says following my wheel without permission. I almost fell of the bike when he said that :twitchy: We went back and forth with it and i told him i've been riding there for 20 years and never heard of such thing. I also told him sorry if i hurt his feelings for riding his wheel and not asking first.(sarcastically of course) I told the guy that was his opinion and that i was going to keep doing it. So is there such a thing? Was i wrong? Flame on i can take it. |
