Newbie, need some help.

I just picked up a Cannondale Silk Road frameset from 1997/98. Its new old stock and in prime condition. So now I'm online looking for components. My first question, will modern components fit this bike?

I'd like to go with a triple. I'm pretty sure they made a triple in that time frame so I'm assuming I'd be OK to go with that and the frame should fit it.

The only info I'm sure about is that the original bb for that frame was shimano lp27, I think 68 x 110.

Anyways, I can find a new Shimano 105 group (double) for the same price as a lightly used Ultegra 6600 group (triple). Any opinions?

My only experience is riding a fs mtn bike for the last 10+ years (cannondale super v). Trying to shift to road bikes because I want to go farther and faster on paved surfaces.

Why not just replace the brake pads, tires and tubes and ride it as-is for a while?

I have an Ultegra 6703 triple crankset 175mm I'll likely be selling shortly. I would be happy to sell it to you :-)

Only about 500 miles on it...

Because a frameset is only a frame + fork...

Thanks. But I'd like to get the whole drive train and brakes in one fail swoop. I've priced them out individually on a couple sites and ebay, doesn't save you any money and you end up paying more for multiple shipping charges.

D'oh! Sorry, I read that as bike, not frameset.

Don't let a little thing like that stop you.

I'll go with Ultegra.

I have no experience with the 105 double or 6600 triple, but my 6703 triple (52/39/30) has a ton of chain noise on the 39T ring. I have talked with others who don't really care for the 6703 triple either. Maybe the 6600 is better, but I think I'd rather have a compact to be honest.

The whole reason I'm swapping out my triple for a standard 53/39 double is because I am beyond annoyed at the chain noise on the 39 ring.

Plus I never use the granny ring anyway. There are times I am tempted to (which is why I've considered locking out the granny) but it is only a temptation because it is there.

Granted there aren't any really long grades around here, but I'm comfortable (if a bit slow) on the 39 ring even on the steep hills.

So something to consider if you were looking at any 6703 triples. I would avoid it.
