Texting while cycling?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Texting while cycling?

Had a strange headline in the local news today. Biker was struck by a truck and a witness claims the cyclist was texting and drifted out in front of the truck.
https://www.wndu.com/localnews/headlines/102860859.html

I have texted a couple of times on my bike I have to admit but on rural backroads with no cars anywhere in sight - also have taken pics and sent from phone while riding.

I have seen this more and more frequently. I don't know how people do it. I can ride without my hands on the bars, but it takes most of my concentration to maintain my balance.

It doesn't matter if you can do it or not, it's absolutely stupid and reckless.

You're on a bike. You can stop, text, and be off again within a few seconds.

Same could be said for drinking, eating, blowing snot rocket, etc... But I do those things, and I bet you do too.

With that said, phone is turned off, airplane mode when I'm on the bike, I don't like to be interrupted while I'm in the zone enjoying myself.

I do enough b!tching about people that text while they drive, there's no way I'm going to try it while on a bike. If you text and ride, you might as well go pickout a headstone you like and get the wording you want on it.

Not to mention all those things are easier to handle and you'll be much more willing to drop them should the need arise.

Plus you won't have to slow down. Someone who is texting is not going to be able to hold a decent pace.

I can not think of any text message that is important enough to send while on my bike, even if it was completely safe, maybe turning around, so my wife would know when i was going to be home. But she knows I will be hope 15 minutes after I say I will be.

I ride a tandem, and have either my secretary or transcriptionist handle my texts for me from the back saddle.

So

Messing around with an iPod = good
Texting = bad

Just trying to keep track of the rules.

I had this thought the other day while driving down a crowded blvd. Lady commuter (nice equip, not a shabby looking I shouldn't knows better rider) pulls out her phone and starts talking while riding inches away from 50 mph traffic. I'm thinking that if something had happened, it would surely have show up in the forums as a another stupid driver thread.

Wrong.

Try to do something simple - like count - when you're composing text.

Texting takes a lot more brainpower than all the other things put together do.

Skol- I saw that this morning. I live in South Bend and on my way out of town this evening I pulled out my phone to try to text. It's pretty difficult if you are really saying something important. When things like this happen to "cyclist" I always wonder if it was a guy on his bike going to work or....someone actually training (following a basic set of rules and obeying traffic laws). There is a difference, I think?!

First post, hello everyone!

I took this picture coming into Tahoe City a couple of week ago and caught myself drifting into the street.

Definitely pulled over and stopped to take this pic. Would have rolled all the way down into Emerald Bay if I had gone off the edge!
