Jasper Disaster

Our group is planning a trip to Jasper Arkansas next month to ride a route commonly known as the "Jasper Disaster", there is a race there in the spring. About a 52 mile very hilly route. Some in the group have expressed wanting to extend the ride to a longer distance, and concern about the safety of the roads in terms of blind corners, no shoulders, and motorcycle, apparently a big motorcycling area as well. Would appreciate input from anyone either familiar with or even better living in that area regarding this. Any route suggestions welcomed also. Thanks

You might have better luck with this if you posted it in the regional forum for this area.

I have to admit I wasn't aware such a thing existed. Where would I find it? Thanks

Okay found the regional forum, posted there, don't think much hope for a response based on the number of people viewing that forum.

I think you can pretty much assume that if it's an organized "race", or even just a ride, they'd have thought a bit about the route. Generally, it's not a good thing if riders get creamed at these events. At the very least, it's bad publicity.

Maybe you should contact the ride organizers with your questions?

We are not going for the race, the race is in April or May which is not high tourist season, October when we are riding is high season. Not doubting that those who organize the race have considered the route, however a good route for an organized race, with some degree of traffic control, might not be the same as a good route for 10 guys with minimal support.

Just to update, got back yesterday, rode out of jasper over the weekend although not the disaster route. What an epic ride. Two brutal climbs, first one two miles of mostly 10-11% with a few kicks up to 18 just for good measure. Then 30 miles more or less of rollers on the ridge top, a screaming descent, then the second climb up and over mt sherman, not as steep as first, mostly 8-9% but longer. Great ride, highly highly recommend it.
